Strangely, I don't associate enjoying depressing songs with a state of mind. I consider myself an eternal optimist that suffers from bouts of realism but yet Elliott Smith is one of my all time favs. I love his art but I try to not let it influence my outlook too much.

Thank you. I love when people find something new.

I love Ridgeway-- he's is a consummate storyteller --but this was from the singer who took his place I WoV. (I prefer Stan's solo work).

My mood affects my music choices, or at least my prompt choices, and often vice versa. It hasn't been an active choice, just one I noticed, as this song is so bleak but beautiful.

One of the joys about living in Portland is the music scene. I worked a couple Heatmiser shows, and saw Elliot solo a lot, though I never worked one. And, as I will continue to mention, I miss him a lot.

Rob also sings backing vocals on the official track. Rob speaks a bit about how they and Cyndi met and came to write the song, in the video below.

I love music history. All the little tidbits and minutiae surrounding these legends. The little pieces that make a whole.

The prompt is long. My story is short. In the "karaoke" prompt I said I did karaoke once as therapy. Scream therapy. I was having a very rough night, so I broke a personal rule and got extremely drunk by myself after determining the karaoke machine at the bar had this song. I screamed my way through it and had a sore throat for two days. I also forgot where my car was (but at least I didn't drive it home). On the other hand, I found a fantastic taco truck with amazing breakfast burritos when I went looking for it, so I considered it a win.

I've seen that documentary many times, but not for a number of years...

But for me, the brain-melting bonus is when Cohen starts to speak. Lovely!

I luv Devo! But I've never been as sure about their covers (and I suppose it depends on which cover), however I do find them interesting. Some are good, some are bad... some seem strategically and intentionally "good", while some seem provocatively and insidiously "bad". But I do like how they 'de-evolve' things based on their own aims and desires, with some of their live versions bearing little resemblance to the originals. I also really enjoyed how Rage Against the Machine gave them a taste of their own medicine by "devocising" one of their classic songs until it was difficult to recognize...

There's something about Morrissey. He's a contender for the Most Pretentious Person Ever award, but damn it I love his music. It speaks to me, it vibrates deep inside my soul and I just have to get it out. It doesn't matter much which song it is, whether he's singing about nuclear bombs or cemeteries or the inability the love...

When he hits the crescendo in the final verse, when he can't contain himself any longer, that's when I shout.
That's when I scream.
That's when I sing.
I sing my fucking heart out.

Belly - Seal My Fate
A beautiful swoony song featuring two of the loveliest women in rock (i met them, can confirm). Tanya Donelly has such a great voice, it purrs like a kitten and then shreds your skin a moment later.
Belly are such an under-rated band and this song should have been massive... just bad timing (In the UK it was during the godawful britpop era).
Love the loping beat on this too, very easy to skip to as you walk and sing it in your head (speaking from experience)

I just can't help but shred my vocal chords when this little ditty comes on...
Not because of the infernal allure of demonic connection (boring)... but because I think of this as a pure expression of my more carnal and terrestrial love (exciting). Of course, when I'm singing this to (or about) the object of my affection, it does become infused with a certain diabolical energy!
In all honesty, the scream-singing doesn't start until just before a minute-and-a-half in... but the seductive introduction and build really pays off when the shit finally hits the fan... and by the end I've practically screamed myself hoarse. Now this is a love song!
