This song was Bauhaus’s first ever single. They recorded it in one take. Six weeks after they met. It feels entirely experimental, like they were still tuning their instruments yet somehow it all works. And while this song is now considered a pioneering song of the goth musical movement, it wasn’t written as such. It’s a post punk song that was dark and brooding and the moody punks gravitated towards it and a new genre was formed.

When I was in college, my freshman and sophomore year roommate bought a guitar. This was the song he’d play after any party before he passed out drunk (I was a good kid and didn’t start drinking until later) but I always enjoyed listening to him play.

Oh I think I caught up a long time ago. Just setting new records every damn…weekend.

I used my TV as an alarm clock for a while (it was a cool new auto-on feature for a while). T-Th junior year that meant waking up to the Sailor Moon Theme song. Not sure I ever actually watched an episode but I can sing the damn song to this day.

M,W,F was Xuxa for the record. Man. The 90’s.
