I tried to find a version of this that I loved, realizing now that the album version and remasters are played a half beat or so slower than they played it live, and I actually prefer the live versions better. One for the pace, two because Novoselic's base comes through heavier in the mix, and you can hear how much it actually drives the whole ordeal. For those not familiar with the lyric it's

"Teenage angst has paid off well, now I'm bored and old"

And really, the song, more so than almost any of Cobain's, has so many direct shots across the bow of the media, his critics, and the industry at large. It feels so much more personal than almost anything else in the catalogue, save for 'Something in the Way'.

Woods Of Ypres - Your Ontario Town Is A Burial Ground

I’m choosing this song not because it’s good, it really isn’t, but because it feels as though they wrote this for me, from my lived experience of having grown up, and subsequently having left in order to survive, my Northern Ontario town. It’s quite likely someone from this band had the same life experiences, considering they are from my home province. If you happen to know Woods Of Ypres, you’ll know they are depressing as hell and sometimes it’s just what you’re looking for.

This song is a reminder that I left for a reason, and that all the struggles were worth it in order to have the life I have today. Not bad for a pretty terrible song. You should still listen to it

The opening line is only good to me, I think, as it will have no meaning to much of anyone else

“Ever since I was born in a Northern town
I’ve been digging myself out
From a time when I hadn’t seen
Anything worth remembering”

What's the deal with frosty northerners and mediocre doom metal? I'm going to send you something in DM since I don't wish to be DQ'd!

That said, I really liked this. Even though I've had the exact opposite experience from you I reckon, having moved from the capital to a small cold town where there's really nothing left, the sentiment applies both ways.

But old friends still live their lives
Where I would have died of shame

The lyrics are clumsy, but I get their point.
I wouldn't move back, no matter what.

First of all, and I can't overstate this, I'm not condoning vigilantism. However, when I was nearly thirty years younger than I am now, I somehow had a cassette of this intriguing album fall into my possession... and once I was driving age, this became a natural highway companion. I've always been meaning to get more thoroughly acquainted with this band and their output, but I never seem to remember to actually do so.
I was raised on 'story songs', and loved them ever since I was a young boy, as my parents constantly played folk music in our home. But right from the jump, this "story" was something quite different than I was used to... as the listener is immediately gripped by the action, the foreboding sense of menace and dread, and the very inappropriate excitement...

"We went into town on the Tuesday night, searching all the places that you hang about... we're looking for you."
