I was just talking about the Sisters of Mercy cover of this and how much I like the inversion of the chorus where they say” just a kiss away” instead of shot away. Changes the whole song. Doesn’t make it better I don’t think but it’s such a good way to make a cover your own.Day 17: A song from the 60s
Gimmie Shelter - The Rolling Stones featuring Merry Clayton
I just really love this song. It is about the brutality of war...
War, children, it's just a shot away
It's just a shot away
Rape, murder!
It's just a shot away
...but there are other meanings behind the song. It came to me when I was trying to remember an Irish artist who sang an Irish song in the 60's... virtually impossible task for me lol. I don't like posting songs I don't personally love and haven't heard before, so this is my offering.
Merry Clayton's voice makes this song. I listened to an interview with her on Fresh Air and she talked about being pregnant and getting the call to do it in the early hours of the morning and deciding that this was something she had to do despite being very tired.

I am not a Stones fan. I never have been. There are some songs I enjoy, usually the slower ones ("Wild Horses" and "Angie" are lovely), or really really weird ones ("Too Much Blood," for some reason, is near to my heart). And Charlie Watts is just a delight. Other than that...meh.Day 17: A song from the 60s

Haha, I went for the cover of the dubliners to at least get the seven drunken nights in, sort of.feelt is leaves us hanging at 5Let's say the song was released on an album or single in 1963, but someone has a recording of a performance from the 1970s, whether that be a radio program, TV appearance or digitally transferred from vhs tape. Hell, maybe even a re-release on CD but the copyright data is wrong. Or maybe a performance by at least one of the original members later on. I could go on.
Hi! I see you’re new here so I’ll let you off with a warning
There’s a very strict one song rule here, and that includes multiple versions of the same song. (Some leniency for that one if it’s a cover song prompt day.)
The guitar intro is very iconic. It's one of those things that is brilliant in its simplicity.I am not a Stones fan. I never have been. But yes, Merry Clayton's voice is the only reason I listen to that one.
Thank you!
