Day 15: a song that mentions a specific type of flower:

I was a theater kid. I love musicals. And sad movies. And this was one of the first I saw on a big screen. It is big. It is a musical. And it is sad. I cried my fucking eyes out. (I do that). If you haven't seen The Rose, it is loosely based on Janis Joplin, and was originally titled "Pearl," Janice's nickname and the title of her last album before she died of an overdose.

This is a song about hope, about what love should be. It is beautiful, and sadly, cautiously optimistic. And it fits so well in the move. It wasn't written for it, though. I'll get to that in a minute.

Bette is a polarizing figure, musically and outside of it, for a lot of reasons. This was her debut as an actor, and she is so good. This is Bette Milder at her absolute best. She soars, but she gets the small, quiet beats perfect, something I always felt she lost later in her career.

The other secret weapon in this is Amanda McBroom. Those sweet, sweet harmonies? That is Amanda. Just her. She also wrote the song, and had used it on stage for a while. I also had the joy to see her on Broadway. Beautiful voice.

This is the soundtrack version rather than the single. The single adds these lovely strings, but it is not necessary. This is the version with just the two voices and piano.

Goddammit!

Day 15 a song that mentions a particular type of flower

18+1 =19. I’m just guessing this is my total.

Helen Reddy was pretty popular in my household growing up. My mom and older sisters loved this song in particular and it was on the record player regularly during Saturday chore days.

The only acceptable version of this song IMHO.

Day 15 - A song that mentions a particular type of flower
Went a route I typically don't go on here... which is super religious. I'm not a Catholic anymore, but grew up in the church (youth group, summer camps, alter person, etc. etc. etc.). I still love the hymns and some of the religious music I listened to when I was active in the church. Danielle Rose's music always makes me feel that spiritual pull and I still connect with many of her songs despite being someone who the Catholic Church thinks is damned.

This song is about the crown of thorns, from the perspective of the Rose from which it was made. I love the album version, which is just her singing with no music accompaniment. When I went to grab a video I found this version with the Notre Dame Folk Choir (University, not French Cathedral) and it's fucking beautiful. It's a long and slow song, but I think that really fits with the idea of the crown of thorns and the journey to the crucifixion. +1 (22 total)

Day 15: A song that mentions a specific type of flower (rose, daisy, tulip, etc)

I hope this qualifies as specific enough. I love this song, Used to sing it to my kids when I rocked them to sleep

Wildflowers-Tom Petty
I know it is sacrilege, but I have always been ambivalent about Tom Petty. I like some of his early stuff, and the Wilbury's work was brilliant, but hell, look who he was playing with. I remember laughing at the lawsuit that was filed because some artist "sounded like a Tom Petty song." Dude, any song sounds like a Tom Petty song! He doesn't stretch much.

That said, that is an utterly lovely and charming song, and I had forgotten about it. Thank you!
