Day 12: A song that features a non-mainstream instrument

I first considered Norwegian Wood with the sitar, but didn’t figure a video would be available, then I thought of the Monkees’ Daily Nightly, perhaps the first song recorded using a Moog synthesizer! Amusingly, when Micky Dolenz and Mike Nesmith were performing together a few years ago, they wanted to do this song but couldn’t find a Moog available, so Mike would try to imitate the sounds vocally!

Day 12: A song that features a non-mainstream instrument (something other than guitar, bass, drums, keys)

This might be a stretch, but there's a whole orchestra behind this one.
Edit: No Celine Dion, but a choir of backup singers. (+1)
Can you really claim +1 for this? It’s not a female artist. In fact, you should lose points for picking this pedophile rapist piece of shit. But thats just my opinion of course

I was going to say the exact same thing. Maybe even DQ'd from points.

I've talked about that previously in the thread when someone brought up the controversies around Brody Dalle, so I'd be a hypocrite if I didn't do the same now.

Yeah, R.Kelly's a piece of shit, but, why doesn't anyone speak out whenever someone links Bowie or Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin or Bob Dylan songs in here? Is it because their crimes are older, no longer fresh in memory?

It's often hard, but, there's a lot of brilliant art that's been crafted by horrible people. Once it leaves their hands, and is consumed by us, it is no longer theirs. Our experience with their art forges something new, something untainted.

I'm a big proponent for separating the art from the artist, even when it's difficult.

There's a difference between Brody's issues and actual rapists. She's in the same category as Courtney Love as far as just being someone I want nothing to do with and won't spend a dime on just because my opinion is she's a horrible person vs a child rapist that goes so far as to record himself performing the illegal acts.

I vaguely recall a story about Steven Tyler taking a 17 year old (?) across state lines but don't remember the details. I was never an Aerosmith fan anyway. Never Heard the Dylan story.

I don’t make noise about it either way because it is complicated and a very personal choice that I don’t think necessarily says anything about the person making the choice (it can but only in context with a larger set of actions to observe). Anyway, I really liked this book on the topic.

I get what you’re saying and I agree for the most part. I’m certainly not a big fan of cancel culture but there’s something extra sinister and evil about R. Kelly and how he ruined the lives of almost 50 young women that triggered my response.
I will definitely be checking out the book recommended by @SalaciousMonkey22

I agree with PP and some of your points, V.

I don’t know about Bowie, Led Zep, or Dylan’s shit. I do know Aerosmith was a groomer and gross. 🤮 same with Drake and I’m sure many other artists. The thing is, all celebrities of that level are horrible people. They are insanely wealthy and you dont get there without doing shady and shitty things to people. Not that all are abusers, but there are issues that could cancel anyone.

For me, the line has to be, at minimum, a convicted rapist and pedophile. Especially to the level of R Kelly. For me personally, I do not consume his music anymore even though there were plenty of songs I loved (Ignition Remix, forever gone in my mind). And to share his song in a month where we celebrate women, and claim a bonus point (yes I know this is trivial in the grand scheme of things), feels especially egregious. I’m sure some of that is because it is recent and was very public.

However, I’m not going to judge someone for choosing to listen to him or any others, it’s just my choice.

Anyways just my 2 cents

Minimum -5 for the rape and another -5 that it was pedophilia, probably just drop this month’s points to zero.

I think I’ve snagged a quote from everyone in this convo. Thank you all for the discourse.

For the technical matters: @Azuldrgon you absolutely cannot collect a point for this. It’s one thing if there’s a badass female band member with a guy fronting the band (that still qualifies if you acknowledge who the woman is). But part of a unnamed chorus? No.
I’m not going to deduct points or DQ, though it’s tempting.

Now, for the other half of the discussion:
R Kelly is a certified piece of shit. Someone posted Kanye West a recently and I piped up that he is [also] a piece of shit and I will not support him with one single YouTube view. I feel similarly about R Kelly.

I very much see where vagrantx is coming from about separating the art from the artist. This is something I struggle with. It might be hypocritical, but it definitely hits me harder with some situations than others. Some, like many of the ones you mentioned, I’m not familiar with the controversies. Others, maybe I didn’t think what they did/said was worthy of full boycott. (Like, if Aunt Becky was in a good movie, I’d probably still see it even though I disagree with what she did.)
But sometimes I learn something about an artist, and I’ve lost respect for them and their art. There is SO much greatness out there. If I never listen to another R Kelly song, I won’t feel deprived in any way.

That all being said, I fully support anyone calling out any artist that someone posts. Let’s keep in mind that the poster might not be aware of whatever the artist did, so have patience, but please do call out and educate.

Okay. I get the gist of it.
I didn't mean to trigger folks regarding the artist.
That being said, I agree he is horrible as a human being.
Look at the other artists we have posted though, some of whom have done some disgusting stuff as well.
It's music. Just like in comedy and movies and television and other art, the person may have performed even though they were disgusting individuals.
So yeah, he's a piece of shit.
But the song is still a good song.
