Day 30: A song you connect to someplace else

A place and time. I was about eleven or so when I had an epiphany about music. Up until then, I knew there were bands, and bands made music, but the idea of a band coming together was not a concept I grasped. Until an ABC made-for-TV movie called Cotton Candy. Ron Howard directed it, with both father Rance and brother Clint. It stared Charles Martin Smith as a high school senior who starts a band they name Cotton Candy. It was not a classic movie, and I haven't watched it since then because I don't want to ruin the warm glow I have for it, but I also had the novelization, which was a thing, and I read that a lot. He started a band -- it wasn't just there. And I knew I was going to. It was years later, but it happened.

The first iteration (there were at least three) was Love Kills, which I still think a better name than "Cotton Candy." I had the garage, and the drum set. Bassist and lead guitar were two guys I played football with. Rythem was my buddy Steve. We took turns singing. And I still remember that first practice. There was a point, and it is a memory clear as crystal in my head, when we suddenly were playing together. We had started jamming, then we were playing a song -- a real song. I had been in band in school, but it struck me : I was in a band. It was magic, fucking magic, and I have chased feelings like that since then.

And the first verse of this song takes me back to that. It was my beat-up Matador rather than a Doge, but that space, with my drums jammed by the washer, three third-hand or better mic stands, John's amp he bought from Sears, all of it -- it just takes me back. I have played since -- I just sat in on congas for a gig a couple of months ago -- and it far, far better bands, but nothing feels like when you were 17.

And in a band.

"Joe's Garage," Dweezil Zappa

(I have already posted the original, so I found this very capable live cover by Frank's son, whom I am also a fan of.)

I do love this this thread, and I also wonder if it loading terribly for anyone else?

It refreshes itself multiple times on full/more full pages and oftentimes errors out on mobile for me.

If I remember correctly, the 31st prompt was for us to pick a song we were introduced to by someone else. I assume that meant here, but I'm sure it could be from outside of Lit as well.

My brain sometimes remembers things backwards though... now I'm thinking the prompt was for a song that we introduced to someone else? 🤔

Yes. That happens for me too.
I was considering opening a new thread but someone here told me that wouldn’t make it better.

I get the same thing on my punk rock thread, and some other threads that are heavy with vids from YouTube.

Has anyone else lost the ability to format their text. My whole text line on my phone is grayed out for about the last month. It’s a minor in annoyance is all.
