Day 23: A song that mentions a body of water

My birthday is coming up tomorrow, and that makes me introspective. Or more so. As i have said in here many times, the ocean is where my soul lives. And this is a song of love and contemplation on growing older, written by Jimmy Buffett for a drug smuggler who would rather have been a pirate. I get that.

Jimmy is a sailor at heart. I am a surfer. I have surfed the Pacific, the Atlantic, the Caribbean, the Sea of Japan, and the North China Sea. And everywhere, when you are past the breakers waiting for your set -- which is my favorite part of surfing, as boring as that seems -- it is just you, the sea, and the sky. And that's where I find myself, who I am, just me and Mother Ocean.

"Mother, mother ocean, I have heard you call
Wanted to sail upon your waters since I was three feet tall
You've seen it all, you've seen it all"

Tomorrow I grow a year older. When I get off work, I am going to drive a couple hours to the Pacific, strip down, and walk into the sea. I don't do this every year, but it has been a hard year, and I want to wash it from me, to Go to Water.

And I may just be singing this.

"A Pirate Looks at Forty," Jimmy Buffett

Day 24: A song that mentions earth (dirt, land, etc)

In 1988 there was a tribute album called Stay Awake: Various Interpretations of Music from Vintage Disney Films. It was low-key awesome. This was my favorite, a dark, very Tom Waits interpretation of the only part of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs that I liked...

"In a miiiiiiine!"

"Heigh Ho," Tom Waits
