Day 3: A song tied to a memory

Ice Ice Baby - Vanilla Ice

So, there's actually a couple of memories that this song elicits for me, but...

My very first concert that I got invited to go to at the literal last minute was Bowling for Soup opening for Vanilla Ice. I still don't know why Bowling for Soup was opening for Vanilla Ice. I still don't know why either were playing in my small town. All I do know, is at 13years old, I knew every word to this song, and a dance we had to it from summer camp. I was in the front of the crowd performing for no one, but Vanilla Ice pointed to me and invited me up on to stage to showcase this line dance to his song.

Talk about a surreal but memorable moment.

Omg! Thats amazing! You’re like Courtney Cox only willing to talk to me!

Day 3: A song tied to a memory

This song came out late 1998 but it was played a lot late 1999 when we all thought the world was going to end (did it?) with the Y2K bug. So, whenever I hear it I remember 19 year old me singing along to the lyrics...

Health insurance, rip off lying
FDA, big bankers buying
Fake computer crashes dining
Cloning while they're multiplying
Fashion shoots with Beck and Hanson
Courtney Love and Marilyn Manson
You're all fakes
Run to your mansions
Come around, we'll kick your asses

You Get What You Give - New Radicals
Great song. They said in an interview they did that verse as sort of a trap. They call out corporations for being horrible, the celebrities for being celebrities. And which part did the reviewers fixate on?

Also, in high school, I learned an old computer language, COBOL. I had people (well, fellow geeks) tease me for it. Come 1997 or so, companies see the date structure issue, and a lot of it was written in an old, almost dead language. Even with the minor skill I had, I made money hand over fist for two plus years, just updating that tiny piece. The reason Y2K was such a dud as a catastrophe was most of it fixed well beforehand. (And I bought my first house.)

Oh, I would have loved to see Bowling For Soup...

Somebody I loved very much loved this song but he could never ever remember the name of it….no matter how many times I told him…and he always got the movie star wrong…. still laugh every time I hear it.
I love that.

Day 3: A song tied to a memory

Always Be My Baby - Mariah Carey

Middle school PLP dreamed of what love held for her in the future while she applied too much glitter eyeshadow and thought she was absolutely nailing Mariah's runs. Little could she imagine what the future had in store and how much she would still love glitter one day.

Day 3: A song tied to a memory

One of my favourite things about music is that it can bring you back to a place, a moment in time, it can remind you of a person, a thing, a smell, a sound, a feeling, pretty much anything. And it can do it in an instant. Pretty much every song I've heard before gives me some form of memory recall, so this is one of the most vast categories possible to me.

This song reminds me of a person, a tv show, and generally that sometimes we gotta do what we gotta do to get by. A triple whammy.

Day 3: A song tied to a memory
We had an under-21 nightclub called Journey that we all used to go to after the high school football games on Friday and sometimes Saturday nights. It could hold at least 500 people, and it was always jam-packed with friends and people from other parts of San Diego as well. This one was always one of the last songs of the evening. So many good memories remain from a long time ago. This was a lucky song for me...

Day 3. - A song tied to a memory

So I learned of the death of a friend last night. He had been sick but was in remission. I had made plans to get together with him last month but had to cancel. We agreed to do it next year. 💔

We bonded over many things, one was music. Jim introduced to this artist and not only loved her music but had a major crush on her. Forever, I will think of him whenever I hear her and whenever I hear this song, I'll be reminded of my regret over canceling my trip.

#FUCKCANCER! (again)

Day 3: A song tied to a memory

"Life By The Drop" -- Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble

This one is personal. We are rapidly approaching the four-year anniversary of the death of my closest friend. (He was an only child, so we were actually more like brothers.) It was a heart attack in the middle of the night, and he was only 50.

This song...well, it speaks for itself. And that's all I'm going to say about that.

I am sorry to hear this sad news…

My condolences….

Day 3: A song tied to a memory

Spoon is one of my favorite bands. Fall of 2023, my wife and I took a long driving vacation all across the northeast. Maine sea coast then across to NH, VT and into NY state. Just cruising around with very few destinations and no real calendar for a few weeks.

We both needed it. This song was in heavy rotation on XMU at the time. It’s such a beautiful song.

To this day we calm each other “My Babe”. Kinda corny, but we’re kinda mushy that way.

This song will always remind me of those couple of weeks where we were able to get away from every day life and just enjoy each other. The weather was fantastic. Warm during the day and cool enough for a fire every night.

Spoon - My Babe

Day 3: A song tied to a memory

When I saw today’s prompt this is the first song that came to mind. It’s the first memory I have of falling in love with music. Singing along with my dad while this song came on the radio on our way to a family fishing trip, my uncle teaching me how to sing the harmony at the end. Ah, the innocence of a five year old 😜

Fishin’ In The Dark - Nitty Gritty Dirt Band

Day 3: A song tied to a memory

When I was a teenager I lived in Japan. I'd been living with a host family for a few months and came across this CD and this was one of the songs on it. I listened to that CD with my host sisters a lot and every time I hear it, I'm instantly transported to our bedroom. There's a sliding glass door that opens up into a small clearing surrounded by a bamboo forest. There is a bunk bed and a futon on the floor for me. It's a wild room with the three of us and we're having the time of our lives.

I then bring this song into motherhood with me. I sang it to both my babies in utero, and to soothe them to sleep as infants. I still sing it at times for them as I look into their eyes, stroke their hair and remind them everything is going to be okay.

Your Song - Elton John

My condolences. I raised a glass as I listened. As someone with regrets of this type (they pile on with age), I hope you can come to grips with it and find some peace. Were we in the same time zone, I would offer to share a bottle and talk it out, or tell stories, or lies, whichever you needed. Be well.
