Day 12: A song that reminds you of a crush you once had
Because I know you guys love it when I tell a long fucking story. My adolescent/teen years, I lived in a neighborhood where there were a few kids my age, and a few kids a year or two younger and we would hang together in the summers, play sports, swim, play video games, typical mid-90s stuff. The one kid, who was 3 years or so younger, also had a mouthy little brother who we let play ball with us just to have bodies/numbers.
Because of that kid, there was a female cousin who was a year younger than me that would come up from down state for a few weeks each summer to 'watch' the kids (mostly the young one) and hang out. This happened from the time I was 15 until 17. And she was fucking sexy. The first real manifestation I had of the word. Dark hair, big brown eyes, and the kind of fantastic tits that come from developing just a little too fast. She was funny and sarcastic and she liked punk rock and didn't have any of the baggage from going to our school of thinking I was awkward (I mean, I was) or anything like that.
We got along great. We shared the short of knowing looks that said 'there's something there but we can't'. Some of it was - in the 'real world' we lived 90 miles apart, and in the mid-90s, with no cell phones and no easy access to electronic comms, etc, what was the point? And some of it was, hey, I know your cousins and this is all kinda weird, etc. But, man, did I make excuses to hang out there in the evenings, and take her and the two boys for ice cream once I had my license, etc.
She probably never had a thing for me. I was just the closest thing to a non-creepy, age appropriate dude she got to interact with for weeks at a time in the summer.
But we listened to this record a lot the summer of '95, and I recall putting this song on a mix tape I sent home with her that fall. It was probably nothing, but even know, typing this, and thinking about it, I get this feeling in my gut that makes me miss that time. That feeling. The idea that I could convince myself that someone I thought that was gorgeous was into me, and that I had a chance to be....whatever. Somehow, I feel happy and sad thinking about it now, and I guess that's how this sort of thing goes.
