Day 12: A song about change

I'm not sure how to classify this band. They sound a bit like AWOLNATION, industrial alt-pop? Subgenres becoming increasingly convoluted.

First heard this song in the soundtrack to Hemlock Grove, an underappreciated TV show starring Bill Skarsgård as a wonderfully weird vampire! Check it out if you haven't. It's definitely.... unique. Entertaining.

Pretenders - Talk Of The Town
Possibly my fave Pretenders song, such a dreamy chorus with Chrissie's pleading "You've changed your place in this world" call... also the "i made a wish, i said it out loud" line is beautiful.
Only loosely change based, but the song got in my head when i saw the theme today.

Day 12: A song about change
I've made my share of poor choices. Hell, I've probably made your share of poor choices. When I was younger, in anger and pain, I got involved in some things I should not have. And when you are young and stupid, you think you have everything under control. And it is, until it isn't. Then you look at what you are, and what you've done, and the devastation you have caused not only in your life, but in the lives of others. And sometimes, "devastation" is the only accurate word. When you hit the bottom, or what you think is the bottom, you have choices to make.

But I refuse to believe I have to be the same person I was born when I die
'Cause change is alright
Change is alright
I'm not proud of all the choices I've made for a lot of my life
Following the shadow when I damn well know that behind me is the light
But I've lied to my mother, I made people feel like hell
But I refuse to believe I have to keep being cruel 'cause I'm a coward myself

But here is the really fucked up thing: you can make those choices, and mean them, and still self-sabotage and cut yourself off at the knees. You can look to change, but change is fear. And all too often, fear wins. That is what lifts this song up from your usual "I was down, but I am looking up" song.

And I've tried having faith, but I'll rot like a dove
'Cause I've always been scared of loving someone just a little bit more than I'm loved
Listen to his energy, his passion up to this point, then listen to the last two lines.
Losing is fine
Everything is fine
That is the sound of a man shutting down.

This song is raw, and painful, and too goddamned true to the end.

Day 12: A song about change

We'll dream about somewhere
Our smoke will fill the air
As I lay awake and wait
For you to walk out that door
I can change, I can change, I can change
But who do you want me to be?
I'm the same, I'm the same, I'm the same
Oh, do you want me to be?

Stranger Things Have Happened - Foo Fighters

I am not a Foo Fighter's fan. I am not sure why. I should love them. I want to love them. Dave Grohl is one of the coolest humans on earth, and one of my big regrets is that he joined Nirvana after they left Portland, so I never got to see him play, much less meet him. But for some reason, Foo Fighter songs just .... I am not sure. Creep me out? Something like it. It is like an allergic reaction. There is no faster way to have me change the station on my car radio than to have a Foo Fighters song come on. And it pisses me off that I don't know why.

But this song? I like this one. A lot. I love the two acoustic guitar lines. I love the metronome. I love his voice here, and the lyrics are intensely personal. Because I can't stand them, I have never heard it before now. Thank you for this.
