42 Million Americans use food stamps…and the program is a mess of expensive waste and corruption.

I think snap should be extremely rigid on what you can use it for. Obesity is the biggest health concern in this country and allowing people to buy garbage doesn’t help. Obesity costs this country billions upon billions every year and is the main driver of the exorbitant cost of insurance premiums and the overall cost of healthcare. The problem is shit food is cheap and healthy food isn’t. But people don’t weigh the consequences in the future vs their pocketbook now.

This has always been my issue with food stamps. absolutely no junk food should be allowed. no soda, no candy, nothing garbage. WIC tells you what you can buy. Food stamps should be like WIC. If you can't make food stamps last, then stop buying premade food. For the $5 to buy a single serving of a (decent) microwave meal, you can buy a whole chicken and make 6 different meals out of just its carcass. Add another $5 and you can add some carrots and onions and be fed for 3 days. Add another $5 and you have enough rice to last several more meals. I used to know people who got $600 in food stamps per month and couldn't make that last to the end because they never once bought a vegetable. I'm all for food stamps to help the poor, but junk food puts a burden on Medicaid. As a middle classer, I can't benefit from food stamps or Medicaid, I can only be a victim of it, and since I'm paying for it, I really feel only healthy foods should ever be allowed.

That's what needs to change before the discussion of food stamps on junk food takes place

For me the issue is abuse. At this point I've seen it hundreds of times. It is very easy to scam the system. It's been explained to me several times by different people. show up to the offices looking dirty, tell them a sob story while pushing whatever minority status you may have no matter how absurd ("the elizabeth warren") and you will walk out with free stuff. Multiply something like this millions of times with millions of illegals who shouldn't be here and its just the start of a very broken system.

It should be a finite resource for people in need. You get x amount of bucks over x amount of time and that's it. If you want to reset you need to go back to work until something else bad happens to you (god forbid).
