The impeachment process is a trial in that the House gathers the evidence then presents it to the Senate wherein the evidence is tried. The Senate acts as judge and jury based on the evidence presented by the House. The Supreme Court Justice presides over the case.

So yes, it is a trial. The judge ruled the House has the authority to gather evidence from whatever source it needs to determine if it should take the next step and lay out the articles of impeachment.

This is no different than a prosecutor gathering evidence to see if they can file a case.

It regularly tickles me that so many who make the effort to spend so much time on a literary site obviously care so little for the literal meaning and purposeful use of words in general, and especially concerning constitutional literacy the framers were totally obsessed about.

Totally unlike "a trial", the impeachment process begins in the House according to whatever rules the House has established for itself as the sole constitutional power to handle the impeachment process, and concludes in the House with an individual being impeached, or not. Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton were impeached by the House, eg, and no Senate vote, or Judicial ruling, or Executive branch action can affect that FINAL RESULT OF THE IMPEACHMENT PROCESS in any constitutional way.

Impeachment is a CONSTITUTIONAL process - not a judicial process - entirely empowered by the Constitution to, and ONLY to, the United States House of Representatives.

Removal from office of an impeached individual is a CONSTITUTIONAL process - not a judicial process - entirely empowered by the Constitution to, and ONLY to, the United States Senate.

The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States of America presiding over the Senate during its debates and votes to remove an individual from office or not is a CONSTITUTIONAL dictate to guarantee that the Constitution is obeyed - LITERALLY.
