For the longest time, Comey mastered the "long con" on being "all things to everyone". Unfortunately for him, he was boxed in by a cabal of rogue FBI agents in New York City who believed their mission in life was to put Hillary Clinton in prison by any means necessary.

Comey was forced to make a choice, one he knew would alienate one factor forever. He gambled that Hillary Clinton would win the election, and the fallout from a Clinton presidency would be "survivable".

He chose.....poorly.

He ended up alienating the Clinton supporters immediately by appeasing the New York cabal and insinuating there was something "criminal" about buttery males.

He also ended up alienating the Trump goosesteppers by failing to produce any criminal evidence of buttery males.

So in trying vainly to salvage his position, he alienated everyone.

Also, if Bill Clinton meeting with Loretta Lynch while his wife was under possible investigation was so terrible, an attorney for someone under investigation contacting a witness who was providing evidence of crimes committed by the person under investigation to prosecutors is at least as bad, if not worse. Especially when they were dangling the prospect of a pardon to induce the witness to either lie about what took place or not provide evidence at all.
