Pa. woman indicted on obscenity charges

PITTSBURGH - A woman who authorities say ran a Web site that published graphic fictional tales about the torture and sexual abuse of children has been indicted on federal obscenity charges.

"Use of the Internet to distribute obscene stories like these not only violates federal law, but also emboldens sex offenders who would target children," U.S. Attorney Mary Beth Buchanan said Wednesday in announcing the charges against Karen Fletcher, 54.

Excerpts of her stories were available to all visitors to her Web site, while others paid to read whole stories, prosecutors said.

Fletcher was indicted by a federal grand jury Tuesday on six counts involving six stories about the kidnapping, torture, sexual molestation and murder of children 9 and under. The charges carry five years in prison each.

Fletcher, in a telephone interview with The Associated Press, said Wednesday that federal authorities "didn't like my site." She had no other comment on the charges.

In court papers, the FBI said Fletcher told agents she wrote most of the stories and posted contributions from other people.

Does this stop and make you wonder if idiot's like this sick woman will impact and ruin sites like Literotica?? Hmmmm?

Nah. I don't think Lit would ever let a story like that through the gate. They turn down stories that imply that someone might be under 18. I think we're safe. ;)

Yes, but if someone like this Attorney feels stories are obscene, would she consider non-consent something that would embolden rapists?....see where I'm going? Could there be a snowball effect?

Hrmm. I hadn't considered the non-consent aspect, but now that you mention it -- there could be a case, there, I suppose. More to the point, it causes me to wonder why (not that I think it should be, but hear me out) non-consent is an allowed cat. when beastiality and under-18 aren't allowed because they're illegal. Last I checked, non-con was illegal . . . . Hmmm. Something to think about.

Then we can get into Incest...which is taboo....gay sex which fires up the extremists....there is something here for everyone to get their panties in a bunch over.
The thing that saddens me is that many great works of writing may be in jeopardy.

We're always in danger. Even the mildest and most consensual of fictional sexual works drive some people absolutely batshit.

But they're a tiny minority. Most people, even if they don't like it, will have a live and let live attitude.

So the danger is minimal.

Besides, there's too much money involved in the porn industry for any Western government to do much about it. ;)

I feel better now. :)

And the irony is, if Lit goes away, websites who stole the stories and are based overseas, will still provide the stories to the same readers.

Personally, I don't like pedo stories, but this is a slippery slope, IMO. Shades of Martin Niemoller and the Nazis..you know, "First, they came for the Communists.."

Incest I can also see them bitching about because it's illegal. Gay sex, not so much, just because it's not illegal. They may not *like* it, but it's not against the law. I think it's sad that our government is so censor happy. Trust me. My husband and I are into BDSM and they've tried to make our porn criminal. If it's not hurting anybody, it's none of their damn business.

But, OTOH, I'm glad that they don't let everyone get away with publishing everything, either, because I agree that publishing child pornography in any sense of the meaning is vile and should be considered a criminal offense.

A lot of it comes down to ignorance and what others deem to be deviant behaviour or immoral. Its easier to focus on one thing and not get the whole picture.

I agree and I think that a lot of censorship tends to be simply a matter of someone else pushing their moral codes off on the majority because they can or because they believe that everyone else should feel and think and be turned on by and repulsed by all the same things that they are. It just doesn't happen that way. It's too bad that we can't all come to some sort of an agreement as to what should and should not be allowed. What should be illegal and what shouldn't.

If it weren't for fanatics, the news would be dull.

There we go again.

I hope that by "this sick woman", you mean U.S. Attorney Mary Beth Buchanan and the idiot legislators that passed the obscenity laws that let her do this. The number of outstanding classic works of literature that have been prosecuted under obscenity laws is staggering.

Writing the fictional report of the fictional kidnapping, fictional torture, fictional sexual molestation and fictional murder of a fictional nine-year-old is as much of a crime as writing about BDSM, incest, non-consent sex, gay sex, or a happily-married couple doing it in the darkness of their room. It all depends on what U.S. Attorney Mary Beth Buchanan feels like. It's all thought-crime.

Sites like Lit are probably not at that big a risk, though. If U.S. Attorney Mary Beth Buchanan wanted to stir shit, I'm certain Laurel and Manu would tell her to fuck off, pack up and move the servers overseas.

Books published as mainstream detective fiction include criminal sexual acts against children and are freely sold here. The difference might be that the crimes are not condoned or praised but dealt with as part of the detection process.

Although when it comes to obscenity and censorship, I'm much more upset about what those idiots at the Berlin State Opera that cancelled their own Mozart's Idomeneo staging for fear of the reactions.

Is that the one that has a scene of Muhammed?

The epilogue includes Idomeneo entering the stage with a bag with four severed heads, which he then takes out and briefly exhibits to the audience: Buddha, Poseidon, Jesus and Mohammed.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't sodomy still illegal in some states? I can't remember.
