New Chain Story Idea: Superstitions

I picked up a book recently at Bookman's called The Dictionary of Omens and Superstitions. I thought it would be an interesting research tool for stories (since I like Sci-Fi and Fantasy so much). I thought this would be a wild chain story idea.

It is now June 1... and we have a contest, National Nude Day, that starts on the 22nd:

National Nude Day (July 14)
themes: public nudity, exhibitionism, etc.
starts: June 22
closes: July 6
winners announced: July 12

I thought what an interesting and fun way for people to enter the contest with a category that they may not readily have an option to all the time.

Any takers?

The last couple of chain stories I was involved in garnered people being nominated for the end of the year author awards :p

This sounds really interesting.....I'd love to be included!

Anyone wishing to do this can either post which one they are wanting to do or pick a letter and I will list out all of the superstitions under that letter and they can go from there. As soon as I have the required amount interested to start the chain story I will post the first few dates.

I'm going to just roll the dice, and have you post some of them for me.

I'll pick the letter "s".......

Thanks!

i like the letter 'v' ... lots of odd things you can do with it..

It really isn't very clear, BTulip, now that you mention it...

We shall assume that it's this way to keep us from feeling constrained or limited in our approach!

edited to add: In Greece, growing violets in or around a home was considered an effective ward against wandering spirits. is this the superstition?

- the world was created in seven days
- the seventh child is lucky, the seventh son of a seventh son is even more lucky they can sure diseases and have second sight
- birthdays divisible by seven are lucky
- seven year itch, every seven years a persons personality changes

- storms are to have been caused by enraged gods
- women are not to cut their nails or comb their hair while they men are at work especially if they are out to sea as it will cause a gale to occur
- if a storm breaks out while a coffin is being lowered into the ground then the deceased has led a very wicked life and has sold their soul to the devil
- very heavy storms are to be omens of death to very important people
- a raging storm can be stilled by throwing a handful of the meal out the window and saying "there that's for you - now cease!"

- bird of ill omen
- hearing it hooting by day will bring misfortune
- looking into a nest will make a person unhappy and morose for life
- if it perches on a house too long or flaps its wings against a window of a house then death will soon come to that home
- if an owl is heard hooting among houses then a girl has just lost her virginity
- if a pregnant woman hears hooting then she will have a girl

And Art if you wanna write in the nude you have at it but please send pictures.

it is said to be unlucky for any author to have the letters X, Y, and Z in the last sentence of any book, for this is an omen that he will never write another

What is the superstition for church and crossing the line?

crossing the line - the ritual actually developed from the tradition in ancient times of sacrificing a member of the crew to the sea gods to ensure a safe voyage for the ship and good luck for all those on board

- a bird perched on the weather vane means a death in the parish in the next week
- a bird flying in during a service means good luck to all in the parish
- the sound of a church door rattling means an impending death
- anyone wanting to see who will die in the next twelve months should sit on the church steps on halloween night and watch the souls pass by
- the person on the steps can save those doomed by throwing off a piece of clothing with each persons passing
