On this list, Blockbuster. I loved perusing the boxes to find something, and then having to have enough faith in it to commit. Also, Blockbuster employees seemed to like movies more than Hollywood Video, at least in my town, and gave better suggestions.

Not on this list, nationwide: Fry's Electronics. You could get parts to build a computer from the ground up, buy a computer game to play on it, find an obscure Hong Kong action flick, shop for a drone, pick up some cheap memory, and get a decent soft pretzel, all on the same trip. Great sales too.

Toys R Us. How is this even a discussion? With the exception of Blockbuster and Hollywood Video, all the other stores have still-existing alternatives. I can't go to Borders, but I can still go to Barnes & Noble. Best Buy does everything Circuit City did. Target > KMart. But there's no just big ol' honking toy stores anymore.

Because when I was a kid, there were three really big, great, independent toy stores in my little town. Toys 'R Us came in, and within two years it was the only toy store in town. And I never went back.

People were weeping when it imploded. I drank to Tammy's Toy Town, King Norman's, and The Toy Shope.

I was so angry the last time I drove by my old Fry’s and saw it had been turned into an Amazon distribution hub.

As much as it pains me to say I think I gotta go with Blockbuster over Toys R Us. I spent a lot more good times with my friends picking out and watching moves in my life than shooing for toys

I agree about the movie experience, but my store was Hollywood Video so I’m going with that! I used to love browsing those aisles.

Tbh, blockbuster was my last choice anyway. We had some fucking cool local video stores that were our go to’s cause they had more obscure sci fi and horror. Only towards the end did Blockbuster kill them off and become our regular.

The coolest was The Odyssey which was next door to the used bookstore, The Iliad, which is my favorite thing in the history of retail.

Stark street? I'm guessing that was farther out east then were I lived... but still...

We had a few local ones, the only one that survived Blockbuster coming to town was on the far far south side of town. I found out later, like college (which was near there actually…) that it survived because it had porn. It wasn’t legal to rent in city limits, hence it was JUST outside them… but finally got closed when the city annexed that area…

Clinton Street Video was an amazing place, but it closed down in the teens.

Movie Madness is still around. The owner was retiring, but the Hollywood Theater (and yes, I love them too) stepped into to buy it. They had a kick starter (I donated!) and not only saved the landmark, they were able to add a screening room.

Update: the nuclear emergency was not real, but it turns out the alarm was actually for a zombie invasion, which is still going on outside. The alarms stopped when the zombies broke into the Emergency Broadcast center. But the coffee is still going.
