When I was a kid I played a lot of a "The Bard's Tale" computer games. In "The Bard's Tale 2" there was an archmage spell called "Camaraderie." I must've been 7 or 8 years old when I first encountered that word, and for years my only reference for it was the name of that spell in that game. Then I came across it again in a book about soldiers in the trenches, so I got a little bit more understanding of its meaning. Unfortunately for me, I had zero understanding of its pronunciation until I said it out loud in front of other people. "Cam-ERA-dairy." And that was wrong.

I don't know why I'm sharing this, except that sometimes past humiliations just pop into my head and it feels wrong to just leave them there. So now you know that.

Salems Lot … think I read it in the 90s sometime as a teen…. I remember the general story …. But not as much the in depth of it.

I’m on a journey to read his entire library from start to finish.

I’ve been doing this off-handedly for years … I re-read It in 2019 …. But now I’m using a website and just going diligently through the books in order of publication.

I’m skipping ones I’ve re-read recently… like the Stand … which I also re-read… I think in 2018? ….

Now that I’ve read the Dark Tower series I can feel a little more connectivity in his stories than I did when I read them as a teen.


Plus re-readings books I read as a kid is always fun cuz I always pick up on some nuance or reference to something I didn’t understand when I read it the first time and now with adult brain I get a greater understanding and appreciation for the book.

Never be humiliated about mispronouncing a word you learn by reading! It just means you learned it on your own and that is something to be proud of.

And I pronounced chaos CHay-os for years.

Salems Lot is one of my favorite of his novels, back when he was popular, but new enough he needed an editor. Well, he still needs one, but doesn't use one.

There are also two short stories in Night Shift, one prequel and one sequel.

Very foggy memories but wasn’t there a spell where you could summon Herb and there was a joke about whether the H was silent or not?

You could absolutely summon Herb as a Level 7 wizard spell and Herb was a BEAST. I never pronounced the H, though. I also played when I was a little kid long before the internet existed. If there were communities of people making jokes about the game, I certainly wasn't aware of them.

Me too. My friend and I would take turn controlling the party and mapping the city/dungeons out on graph paper. I couldn’t remember if the joke was one we made or was in the text 🤣

I did buy the enhanced edition on Steam a couple years back. But did not get far. Gameplay has evolved too much for me to go back.

I got it too and played the heck out of it. It's a nostalgia rush. I will 1000% go back.
Now I want to fire it up again.

I just spent way too long messing with AI Mirror’s goth filter again, for the first time in almost a year. I think their rendering tech has actually gone backwards?! AI filters have a lot to learn about how to render limbs…and hair…and fabric…and non-white people 🫥
