Baltimore, MD - Aug. 21, 2024 - (WBAL) Giant Food is implementing a new policy at select locations, including two in Baltimore, which prohibits unaccompanied minors under the age of 18 from entering the store after 6 p.m. starting August 22. This decision comes in response to increasing levels of theft, which have become unsustainable for the business. The policy aims to enhance safety and reduce theft, following a previous measure banning bags and backpacks in the same locations. Some stores in the Washington D.C. area are also adopting similar policies.

And let's be blunt about it, everyone dances around the problem but whatever way you cut it, it's in specific areas with a specific racial group where it's out of control. They can't bat blacks, that would be racial profiling, so they just ban all teens. When you do it be geographical location, it amounts to the same thing anyhow. One of my granddad's owns a few supermarkets, I worked right thru High School in them and I know all the issues, esp with shoplifting, which is an ongoing overhead that you have to minimize because the profit margin in the supermarket business is tight. That's why you see Walmarts closing down in places like some parts of Chicago, and that's why you see "food deserts". Self-created problem.
Even with these controls, it's not going to work because it's not just teens. These stores will close eventually.
What's going to happen is between this and higher minimum wages, you're going to see more and more automated stores, where you order and pay online, robots fulfill the order and either drop it at your feet in a pickup area, or deliver it by drone or courier - which ain't gonna happen in the areas where you have these problems because couriers will be robbed and drones will be dropped and trashed, and the deliveries stolen. It's fascinating actually. My granddad's looking at doing this and the technology is amazing - w warehouse full of storage cells / bins and robots doing all the order fulfillment. A few IT workers, stockers to keep the storage cells loaded and dispatchers - and even that can be automated with robots to take the bins with peoples orders and move them to courier pickup points - no manual work needed until it gets to the courier pickup point.
So, fortified automated outlets where no credit or debit card to pay, no dice. And you don't get to pick your fruit and veges, not that it matters when you're not buying them I guess.
