Mexican food..not the white folks rendition....I mean hot pasole and tamal with carnitas

In the mornings lately I've been taking the time before work to just close my eyes and actively breathe.

When you are sick or feeling down or just need to feel comfort?

I am super iron-deficiency anemic, so my go-to food when I’m feeling sick is a cheeseburger.
1) Heme (animal-based) iron absorbs into the bloodstream better than non-heme (plant-based) iron.
2) When I’m feeling super anemic, the process of trimming, cutting and chewing steak or other large slabs of meat can be fucking exhausting! Stuff with ground beef (burgers, tacos, meatloaf, meatballs, etc) is easy to chew.
3) Cheeseburgers are a So Cal staple food and are fucking delicious, and therefore easy to convince others to bring or make for me if it means they get to partake

Pork/venison stew with homemade stock, carrots and sweet corn, thick enough to coat a spoon over mashed potatoes with plenty of butter whisked in.

There's a place in an....out of the way neighborhood that caters to a certain demographic of out-of-town workforce. I remain thankful for my meager language skills and the owner is kind to me. She speaks my language - abuela's cooking but on a buffet.

The struggle between personal authenticity and need vs self preservation. The knowledge that those things I crave -- intimacy, connection, -- and those things that define me -- kindness, protection -- can be uncomfortable at best, and psychically damaging at worst in the world I currently find myself. That the need to be who I am versus the need to protect who I am are in conflict. And when I feel that I have found a level of balance, distance, peace, the realization that my subconscious absolutely fucking hates me and wants me to bleed.

It's no "flying through an uncaring and empty universe," but there you are.

The general rule with Mexican food is that the more of a hole-in-the-wall the establishment is, the better the food will be. Run-down old place with an abuela bossing everyone around? Hell yeah. Beat up old taco truck with trompos hanging in the service window? Fuck yes! Little middle-aged lady with an insulated push cart on 3 wheels walking up and down residential streets in the barrio screaming “¿quieres tamales?” and ringing a little bell? Chase her down IMMEDIATELY!

Carnivore meat is always bad. Omnivore meat is almost always just as bad, if they are eating meat regularly.

Well, that's just not true. Pikes are carnivores and suuuper tasty. Boars are omnivores and tasty too. My dad once had a blue whale steak and said it was the tastiest, most tender meat ever. It literally melted in his mouth.

I have a tee shirt that says, "Will Tech For Beer." I love bartering for IT work. Beer, lots of times. Pizza. A tattoo for database work. Other things. But my favorite was fixing a computer for a woman who paid in tamales made by her Abuela who spoke no English. Best tamales ever, and she kept sending me more all summer before she returned to Mexico.

Outside....sadly one must go before sunset and park a block away where the closest parking is....inside? You can eat off the floor and Magdalena is fully in charge; judging the dirt on the boots of her patrons. Nobody sees her slipping some tortillas out the back to some of the wretches that roam the streets there but I have. She always asks me why I come there. I know what she means but I always tell her it's because she is so beautiful. She knows what I mean.

What is your comfort food / show / movie / ritual?

Snack food - Spicy pork rinds and sour cream to dip them in. I know, I'm weird, but it's my low-carb replacement for chips and french onion dip.

Actual meal: Just a good ol' greasy cheeseburger. Whether it's homemade or the bar down the street who has the best bar food around.

Show - Star Trek. Next Generaton or DS9. Others are OK but those are MY go to.

Movie: Midway, the OG from 1976 or the remake from 2019, both are solid.

Ritual: Reloading ammo or sharpening a knife. There's something oddly relaxing about it.
