Sex & Shenanigans

I make excellent money and live in one of the most affordable states in the US. I bought my home right before COVID for $200k; 5 bed, 2.5 bath, custom kitchen, and 1/2 acre property. It has increased in value by 50% in 4 years. I don't know if I could afford to buy the house I live in now. It's insane.
That's.... insanely cheap though! Even after the increase. Compared to Sweden.

Rent is cheap, but buying a place is fucking expensive. Though I can't see a reason to ever buy a place if you don't plan on flipping it.

Brag much?

JK … that’s amazing for you.

Buying in Vancouver is like … upwards of a million dollars for anything … even with my above average income I’m still not qualified for anything that is available

It's so cheap here, I always wonder how others around me make do and get by knowing the average income is so low.

Ok here’s a question to ponder ….

If you could upload your consciousness to a digital platform … and live out the rest of your “life” there instead of the real world.

You’d still have to work but everting would be significantly cheaper because it’s not the real world it’s all digital.

You could live in a fancy house depending on what your job is…
You could travel to places around the world … they would only be simulations of the real world but would look and feel real. Like Paris or Rome..
You could have a pet but no kids…

The catch is …. You would no longer be “alive” in the real world. Your body would be cremated and just your consciousness would exist.

Would you do it ???
Wait... I'd get to continue to "live," but without a body... so I could go about my day and not have my back and knees hurt all the time for no reason? Sign me the fuck up!

Right?! This is what I’m saying!!

You could have the body of your choice… not have to exercise for it … and even if you get “old” it won’t be like aches and pains old.

I had an offer for a job in Seattle and they said I could name my pay, but when I did they said there's no way they could do it. I told them that it was only because of housing because I'd need to buy a $1M home to fit my massive family. Nothing fancy, just comparable. Clearly, I'm not in Seattle now. 😂

I think I would definitely do it … my body is just a meat carrier for my brain (loosely quoting @Otis_Ravelli here)…

Why do I need to be physically alive to enjoy life if life is offered digitally?
I read an essay once (I tried finding it just now, but I can't recall the name) about the issue with teleportation, and I'd assume it applies to this scenario as well.

I'll paraphrase; when you teleport, the person exiting the other machine is not you. You're dead. There's a new entity around, carrying your face, your memories, but not your soul. You're gone. But they're still here, and they think they're you.

I think we are one or two dominoes away from people really struggling.

Due in part to AI and because well they’re fucking morons, the IT sector has been laying off faster than imaginable. That will then make the lawyers and accountants for sure lose some of their income which may cause them to lay off their mornic unnecessary hires. This is not accounting for all the good people who support these industries.

Also, if the IT sector “repositions” to adjust to AI, so will other sectors like sales, marketing, advertising, logistics (or whatever new term they use to package that rabbit hole), and operations. And self-driving fleets are now 2-3 years away from being selectively immersed in commercial applications. There go some large percentage of all of your Uber drivers, your trucking guys and the guys who deliver in general, the UPS and the postal system.

I shudder to think if a perfect storm is coming and all these asshole landlords are charging $2000 rent to live in small apartments, what will happen to people?
My take on AI is that you can't replace Tony Stark with Jarvis. AI is supposed to be a tool that's utilized not a replacement for workers. AI as a whole is still kind of a new shiny object so dopes with money are going to be for sure jizzing their pants over it.

The examples you mention are absolutely a concern. I think there's going to be pushback if we go in certain directions. The layoff of IT workers by the masses is for sure going to generate pushback which will have to be addressed. State and federal governments have already started putting laws in place in regards to AI. That's a trend that will for sure continue.

I’m ok with that.

There are two glaring problems with AI. First is the enormous power/energy suck needed to make the damn thing work. Google has already admitted that they won't hit their climate targets this year because of AI server loads, and a city in the Southwest (I forget the name) asked residents to raise their A/C temps because an AI server farm was using so much power.

Second is the fact that most of it isn't very good. Period. The images invariably look terrible in most cases, and it really can't do much more than look up and find, or 'copy and paste' when used for writing. It's glorified chat bots, and the soon our economic betters realize that, the better off we will be

After I die of old age? Sure.

Hahah i think this bothers me because I really would use teleport all the time but i like my perfect record of being alive.

when I'm reconstructed could I jump into a body that was a slightly different age? And maybe a couple pounds lighter?

No. You can only teleport and downgrade in body. So if you’re like an 8 or a 9 body wise you drop to 5!

I just …. When you are struggling 99% of the time due to forces beyond your control … any alternative looks like salvation.
...It's magnetism, isn't it? I told you, CC, you and physics need to make up... It's hard for all of us.

Joking aside though, it's not much but
🫂
