From what I'm seeing, some details about the shooter's background, a couple interviews with former classmates, it appears the kid is truly a tragic figure. Bullied mercilessly. Became part of the far-right gun culture, maybe to feel a sense of community, or maybe just to feel empowered in some small way. Those are just my admittedly amateur psychologist thoughts. But I saw some commentator posit that he just wanted "death by cop" to leave some sort of legacy in his sad life, to be relevant and important for once. It's horrific that any young person is ever driven to such a lowly state. While I absolutely believe we need stricter gun laws (not saying that's applicable in this particular situation), I also believe we absolutely need a better mental health diagnosis and support structure in every level of society. The right will forever cling to their mantra that guns don't kill people, people kill people. Which is technically true, but guns make it a hell of a lot easier. But I also believe that "normal" people don't kill other people. We have to, as a society, try to minimize the culture that creates monsters like this, and keep guns out of the hands of the ones left untreated or incurable. Frankly, the very title of this thread is part of the culture that creates monsters like this...

I haven’t looked into it, but I have seen reports that his parents were registered Democrats and others that say is dad was Libertarian. The later seems more likely. Trumps campaign had the dad as a strong Republican. I believe that is based on other data gathered. Having a hunting license and being a gun owner would contribute to that.

I mean I think I probably have 13. Mostly passed down from deceased relatives because I'm the only gun guy left in the family. So they all seem to pass to me. I even sold a few to a gun shop that I didn't need.

Anecdotal tangent - one of the gals I knew growing up, her father was a counselor. All three children have massive issues. One moved thousands of miles away, one went NC with all but her younger brother and the younger brother never sees any of them.

I'm not sure, but I don't think I'm in the top 100 of all time posters. There are a number of folks here with a shit-ton more posts than I have, the problem is, most of them are fringe right wing extremists who routinely get banhammered. AJ and busybody (I refer to them by original names rather than their current alt) each have over a quarter million posts each and arrived her shortly before I did.

There was one user, a fringe whackadoodle named Garbage Can, who had 500,000 or so posts (most of them "I agree!" or "you suck!". Nobody paid attention to him. He passed away and nobody noticed for EIGHT freaking months until his cybersex buddy from the Playground came over here to tell us.

500,000 posts and nobody knew you were gone kinda sums up the conservative experience on this board.
