I don't quite understand the argument for the limit, other than "that was what we used to do."
Think of it as server load....
In 2006 the site was so slow, there was minutes between response, it was impossible to keep conversations flowing....
At least for me....
I think "we" have come a long way ....

Assuming they are using a modern database backend, and as someone with professional experience in such things, and assuming they have their indexes set up correctly, closing a thread or not closing a thread won’t affect performance at all.
