Sex & Shenanigans

I know I’ve asked this before … but I just finished a good book and it made me wonder.

So I’ve asked, “if you could choose to know when you were going to die or not to know.. what would you choose”

Most people choose not to know …

I choose to know..

But instead … if you could choose to know HOW you were going to die…. Would you want to know?

Would you change your behaviour if you knew you might die of breast cancer… or workplace accident..

If you wanted to know how but not when … why? What makes one better than the other?

If you said no to both… why?

I think I want to know when and why. If in fact knowing why could help me change the outcome. Knowing when might light a fire under my ass to make the most of my remaining time. I require a lot of motivation to get anything done. What more motivating than impending death?

I don't want to know the answer to either of those - neither when or how. I don't want to be consumed with thinking about my death and I think I would be if I were to know the answer to those questions. I think it would consume me and I'd feel pressure to "achieve" something...

I want to enjoy my life and love my family and friends while I'm living - and not worry about the dying bit. I know it's coming one day. But I am ok not knowing when or how.

I wouldn’t want to know either date or how. Think it’s better not knowing and living your life to the fullest now.

It’s a trick question of sorts. If you know when and/or how you are going to die, then in theory nothing you could change it.

For me I’d like to know when I am going to die, +/- a day or two, but not how.

If I know *when* I’m going to die, then I can either cram in lots of pleasant experiences or even take extra risks. Take out loans I’ll never repay. Piss off people I’ll never have to face. Quit working knowing you have enough savings to live it up until the end. If I knew I was going to die in 90 days, I’d go on an epic motor bike adventure. There’s a movie called One Week that deals with this somewhat.

Knowing *how* would suck because you’d live in fear. Choking? Eat nothing but strained baby food for the rest of my life. Auto accident? I’d be afraid to go near any car ever again. If I knew I was going to drown? I’d move to the desert and be fearful of every rain cloud. And I’d probably slip and fall in the bathroom and drown in the toilet.

I also hate them. I'm sorry for making fun of you earlier. I was still pre-coffee feral Manda. I can't be held responsible for my actions.

Mornings are absolutely the worst. 😘
You were making fun? My skin is too thick here to even notice that one 🤣

No to both, because both things would become obsessions. I subconsciously know I’ve got a timer counting down but to actually know the number would drive me insane.

I read the whole thing, and then got to this part and chuckled aloud... 🫶❤️

No, and no.

It would paralyze me, knowing how or when. I would worry, and kill the time between now and then. Or I would try to change it, and I am thinking from your description that you cannot, but that wouldn't stop me from trying, and again, wasting all that I have between then and now.

I have a finite number of days. I live in the dash between when I was born and when I shall leave. I have wasted enough already. I wouldn't want to destroy what happiness I have to avoid what I cannot. I shall live, then not.

"It's my life, it's better left to chance
I could have missed the pain
But I'd have had to miss the dance..."

Knowing that is enough.

I saw a documentary once that addressed this. It was called Final Destination and the answer is: you can't escape it, so probably best not to know.

Thankfully though I'm *technically* immortal so when I asked the question I crashed the machine.
