Is the surname Brandon politically triggering to people from the USA? i do not know, but I want to use the name for a reason, for a story in this event, but I don’t want any politial effect at all.

It's not a surname, politically. It's a substitute name for "Joe Biden." The etymology involves a crowd at a car race and a driver whose first name was Brandon.

Go for it. A few people might see it as political, but I doubt most will. If you use it as a surname, I doubt anyone will notice at all.

No. The very specfic phrase, "Let's go Brandon" has become a political slogan, but because of the way it originated, only that exact phrase has any significance. And definitely not the name in isolation.

As I said above, @shelleycat1, I doubt it'll pose a problem. The kind of people who use Brandon as shorthand for Joe B are unlikely to be all that numerous. Again, used as a surname, it won't be any kind of problem. As a given name, there might be one in a thousand readers who'll even care. And they won't care all that much.

I believe so. In the past, Laurel added the appropriate tags to one of my contest submissions, because I did not know to do that. But, yes. I would add those tags. Then again, this is a "challenge" not a "contest," so rules may differ...

I mean, if you are not using it in a context that is obviously meant to be on the nose, I doubt anyone will take notice.

I also wrote like 18k words which is crazy for me since I try to keep it shorterish.

I developed the Jack and Jill writing challenge into a 2.5k word story - I figure being inspired by a geeking writing thread on the AH suffices. I have started a story that would be perfect (my geeky scientists again!) for Geek Pride, but the chances of it being complete in time are low.

use “Geek Pride” as a story tag but of you also want to use "geek pride 2024" go ahead and use both.

So, how's everyone who hasn't posted yet (and updates from those who have) going with their entries for this one? Have your inner geeks been duly and enthusiastically released? How many stories are you looking at this year? What do you have cooking?

This is my next project after I finish my current story. I know I only have a couple weeks but I work best under pressure. Still planning on a classic tale of six D&D players (mage, cleric, paladin, Druid/monk, mystic knight, rogue) taking out an incel lich and dragon and then getting it on in a post action celebration. Also some debate with the GM over what place erotica has in such games. And frustration on her part because her primary partner isn’t a player and everyone else is paired off except the biggest geek in the game. Heh.

I still need a title. Ideas welcome.

Laurel has been handling contests and events oddly this year, but the way events ran last year and the year before, they will be published on the 15th and the EVENT will go live with an event page on the 25th. She might tell the readers that there's a Geek Pride event also, but we'll see what happens.

Yes, this pissed me off a bit earlier this year, in one of the events. I didn't understand it then, I understand it less now.

I used to be proud to submit on the first day the challenge "began." Now I'm in no rush. Once this thread tells me the event has gone live, I'll probably submit right then.

Depend on the thread, because if it's run like the April Fools contest you won't find out from Laurel until after the event is over.

Okay, this is definitely different than the On the Job one, where stories were posted gradually. Mine just got approved and it's publication date is 5/25 not 5/15.

Okay. Phew! I thought I was going to miss this contest!! That was my understanding of the "going live" date. Thank you for clearing that up!!
