The AH Coffee Shop and Reading Room 09

I did more outside than I even planned, so it was a good day. I just took an ibuprofen in case my back stiffens on me, I have one indoor chore left, and then I can grill that steak.

And still silence from Duleigh.

For Cinco de Mayo, we hit our usual Mexican place for a slightly early dinner, timed just right for our "designated" parking space and table where we could keep an eye on the dog in the car and he could keep an eye on us. He barked a little bit but quickly calmed down, assuming his "chauffeur" pose in the driver seat, which entertained the party seated behind us, "Such a pretty dog!" He's a cool friend to have around.

Lawns were done yesterday. Today's chore was changing the oil in the big van, long procrastinated since it's our summer "road trip" vehicle. Takes longer than it should, especially dealing with the oil filter. Messy, even when prepared for it. But it's done, and one less gotta-do nagging me.

Auspicious start to a busy week.

And still silence from Duleigh.

Yeah. Nothing since Wednesday night. Concerning. @Duleigh ?

I have instructions in the "Break Glass in Case of Emergency" envelope about logging into the few forums I frequent, along with a list of phone contacts to notify. It's my intent that this envelope will not be opened for, say, 20 years or so, but nature sometimes has other ideas.

I am here, I just got back from the Vero Beach area. Long weekend helping my sister close out my parents house, and long evenings chatting with a publisher.
I am now preparing for my biannual barrage of VA appointments all week long.
Good to see you back. 😎

Publisher? Do tell...

Still helping Dad, or was going to. The parts weren't delivered by UPS. They've contacted the driver and ordered him to come back, which I'm sure we will hear about in great detail.

I need luck with my new radio - I went digital. I have an Anytone 878 and it has a HUGE learning curve. It will do everything but hand you your microphone so you can talk to me.

Hmm. Yeah, looks like something you can't fiddle with while driving. The APRS functionality - is there a built-in GPS? The website for the 878 and their mobile seemed to leave out a lot. I had to look hard on the 578 for which band was the third. 1.25m, and only at 5W.

I was a big "minority" band advocate, and have a Kenwood 741 with 6m, 1.25m and 23cm modules. Haven't turned it on in, oh, ~20 years.

The 878 has APRS send and receive, built in GPS and blue tooth. It comes with a separate blue tooth PTT button that you Velcro to your steering wheel put on your head set and tune to your favorite group. I was led to believe that loading the "code plug" was very hard. Turned out to be super easy, the 878 loves Windows 10/11 and automatically opens a com port. The programming software makes loading the "Code Plug" incredibly easy.

The hard part is building the code plug. The code plug contains all the groups and all the contacts, and our ARES group has one that we hand out and update. I have 20,000 names on my radio and I haven't made a digital QSO yet, but it will store 500,000 contacts.

I used to love 1.25 meters, but I haven't heard anything on that band in the past few years other than repeater IDs every 10 minutes.

Amazing the changes in technology since I was active.

25 years ago I built a 23cm repeater out of back-to-back Kenwood mobiles. I was on the club's tech committee and we had a great site. You can well imagine that it was the loneliest repeater in town. There was one other guy who worked it with an HT and IIRC there was one instance of somebody driving through who pinged it and we had a quick chat. I donated it to the club since I was moving away and had also burned out on the hobby.

I was in deep. There's a box gathering dust in a closet with my ARRL memorabilia. I have a yellow badge... and a green one... and a blue one. When I moved I told them to save their nickels and stop sending QST and they did, but for some reason - renewing my ticket, I guess - it started showing-up in the mailbox again.

I was pretty well out of the hobby too, then I passed General on a whim and got sucked back in

Tx? Anyone?

Milestone: 400 followers and added 401 today. Thanks. It gives me the impetus to polish the current work and get it posted. :coffee::coffee::coffee:

Sadly, Tx is MIA. Last heard from en route to some serious medical work. We are, to say the least, concerned.

Congratulations on the milestone!

If you had told me that the steak was ready I would have been there!

Didn't mean to worry anyone, but it's been a busy, busy week, and I forgot to take my oxygen machine along with me to my sisters abode so it was 5 minutes of helping, 10 minutes of recovery. Repeat until she says "Just sit down and have a drink, you're making me nervous." (The plan worked marvelously)

You have to train them young!

The outlook was brilliant for the Nuggets. The first game didn’t go all that well. The hopes diminished just a little. The second game turned into an embarrassment, and Murry threw in the towel, two times no less. And now we have to go to their town and play, I’ll have vodka and soda water please, coffee won’t do the trick!
