Sex & Shenanigans

Agree on Cruel Intentions, Clueless and 10 Things I Hate About You, but disliked Baz’s Romeo+Juliet. As far as R&J adaptations go, I did really like Rosaline (released on Hulu a few months ago) and Romeo Must Die with Aaliyah and Jet Li. Although I really did enjoy Dangerous Liasons, Cruel Intentions is just amazing. 10TIHAY is one of those comfort movies I’ve watched countless times, but Deliver Us From Eva with Gabrielle Union and LL Cool J is a solid Taming of the Shrew adaptation too
You’re always right Kitty. Especially when we agree 😁

Well, Clueless is hard to argue, because there hasn't been a really good movie version of Emma. The 2020 version was "meh." The Taming of the Shrew is one of my least favorite Shakespeare plays, and I haven't been a fan of any movie version or adaptation, but I stated that above. I found Cruel Intentions silly, though SMG was strong, and Dangerous Liaisons was anything but. And Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet is a beautiful mess, so it is hard to compare to other adaptations, but Zeffirelli's version is brilliant. Honestly, I would choose West Side Story, myself.

Forgot to mention I did like the regency versions of Emma too, but still, lovvve Clueless.

Kinda indifferent toward O with Mekhei Pfeiffer, Julia Stiles and Josh Hartnett. A little too overly melodramatic for my taste.

Also, Harold Perrineau ruins everything and I’m not big on Claire Danes, so they may be factors in my dislike of Baz’s Romeo+Juliet. LL has those sexy lips and I love Gabrielle Union to pieces, so Deliver Us From Eva miiight benefit from my positive bias towards them. I’m definitely guilty of casting bias 🤷🏻‍♀️

We’re also forgetting one of the most successful literary adaptations of all times: The Lion King > Hamlet 😜

Good night fuckers.🫶❤️😁
I hope if you're horny you get off,

Oh, I love Perrineau and Leguizamo in that! For one thing, people of color in a Hollywood version of Romeo and Juliet was inclusion in a time when most Shakespeare was blindingly white was fantastic. Also, they both owned those roles, two of the best Shakespeare ever wrote. There isn't a lot else I love Perrineau in (and god, I came to really dislike him in Lost, but that may have been the writing), and Leguizamo is hit and miss, but I loved them as Mercutio and Tybalt, and they were highlights of the mess.

Ooooh I didn’t think of West Side Story! Assuming you’re referring to the original, not the Rachel Ziegler and Ariana DuBois?

If you didn’t love Gwyn Paltrow’s Emma, have you checked out the Kate Beckinsale TV movie or miniseries with Romola Garai? I did watch the 2020 movie with Anya Taylor-Joy, since it was among the few theatrical releases that were streamed at the same time during the onset of the lockdown, but I admit I hardly remember anything about it. I suppose “meh” would be an apt description, in this case.

Did you see Othello with Laurence Fishburne in the main role and Kenneth Branagh as Iago? Trimmed down, but really good.
I did and I love Branagh and all
his Shakespearean work. My wife saw him as Hamlet in Stratford on the 90’s . But I think he wrote for the people, and updating to be accessible by modern people is not a bad thing.

Paltrow for me is hit or miss. Loved her in Hard 8. Didn't connect in Emma.

Love John Leguizamo, in that and everything else in the history of EVER. Inclusion is great. Harold Perrieau is not! Hate hate haaaaated him in LOST, and his character in the first few Best Man movies was definitely the weak link.

Also, while we’re talking adaptations, the regency version of Sense & Sensibility is wonderful and perfect, especially Alan Rickman. No notes.

On that, we agree completely. Emma Thompson (who wrote the adaptation) has been my long-time crush for so long... God, I love smart women. So sexy. (That includes so many women here in S&S. )

Fair, and same. That version did nail the almost-end scene in the rain though, and the casting for Miss Bates. I liked Gwyn in Shakespeare in Love, and didn’t hate her in Emma, but am usually not much of a fan. Not even as Pepper Potts 🤷🏻‍♀️ I said what I said.
Now what is your opinion on Roxanne vs Cyrano de Bergerac, specifically the 1950 version? Because I love them both.

I’m not sure I’ve seen the 1950 Cyrano de Bergerac, but loved Roxanne. Did you see the 2021 Cyrano musical movie with Peter Dinklage? Love his acting, but the songs were more misses than hits

See? I love smart women!

Did you see Stranger than Fiction? Such a good movie.
I don't know if I've seen that one, actually but I don't always have the best memory of movies. Lol. Especially if I saw it when I had babies.

If Emma Thompson is in it, I will happily watch it. I have loved her so much since I was young.

Love actually is one of my favorites.
