As much as I love Gaiman, if anyone wants to read about norse mythology then please, give the Poetic Edda a read.
That collection of poems, together with the Prose Edda, are more or less the only texts we have that showcase the Asatro, the norse religion.

They are beautiful.

Yes!! I haven't read the english translation, but I'm sure it's done well. Icelandic is not a tongue I master either, so I've only read it in swedish, but it's close enough that the alliterative poems retain their form.

It truly is a beautiful collection of poems I'm so happy you took the time to look them up!

Yeeeesss! And Neil Gaiman wrote a whole book about Norse mythology... or specifically viking mythology? Gotta check that out!

It was actually a rewriting of some of the Prose Edda. It is solid. He writes everything in shorter sentences than is his want, that fits well with the original writing. It is outstanding and very accessible.

While on the topic of outstanding, accessible translations, Emily Wilson's translation of Homer's The Odyssey kicks every kind of ass. She translated it and put it back into iambic pentameter verse, just like Homer, and it is beautiful. Very accessible. She had me at the first line: "Tell me about a complicated man." That was Odysseus, perfectly. It fits the Greek, but I had never read it translated that way. Fucking brilliant.
