Day 23: A song from the 20s

I mean, 2 young women, so points if I was keeping track. :ROFLMAO:

But the humor in this song feels so very British, as does the vernacular used in the lyrics in a few spots. Plus, it's just fun, to me. It's enjoyable to still find new music that's appealing in your 40s, I think.

I get that. I'm 55 and I love finding new stuff in here.

I had a song ready to paste but couldn’t finish an Irish week without

Day 23: A song from the 20’s
(+1 = 40)

Tobias Sammet had a vision. While on tour with Edguy, he began writing a concept album. A metal opera. He wanted the stories and fantastical lyrics of the classical opera, combined with the symphonic melodies of heavy metal.
It took two years, and a lot of string-pulling, but when Avantasia: The Metal Opera was released in 2001, it did so to unanimous acclaim and has been repeatedly ranked among the greatest metal albums of all time!

Featuring 10 different singers from the metal world, legends like Michael Kiske, Kai Hansen, and Sharon den Adel, the album tells the life and story of friends Gabriel Laymann and Lugaid Vandroy, and the tale can only be described as Epic. It's worth every second to sit down and listen to it from start to finish.

It's been 25 years since Tobi began this project; an album which was intended to be a one-time-thing has instead created a phenomena. Almost 60 different metal gods have featured on the 10 albums released since then, names like Alice Cooper and Dee Snider are sure to raise an eyebrow or two, and nearly all music and lyrics has been composed by Tobias alone. The man is a machine.

If you've never had the pleasure before, then please. Come, sit, listen.

Avantasia (feat Floor Jansen) - Kill The Pain Away

Okay, I waited until I got home to listen to this, because I wanted decent head phones.

Oh holy cats and weasels...

The Mystery of Time may be the most epic thing I have ever listened to.

And oak and ash, girl, the guest vocalists! Candice Night! Eric Martin (not metal, but I love Eric Martin)! Biff Byford! Joe Lynn Turner! Ripper Owens! Amanda Somerville! Sharon den Adel! Michael Kiske! I am so sad that Ronnie James Dio passed before this project. 🥺

And Geoff Tate! There are a lot of metal opera/concept albums, but I thought Operation: Mindcrime was the pinnacle. And to be honest, I still think that. But I haven't made it through all of this yet. But Geoff Tate!

Sorry, I have exceed my exclamation point quota for the month, but that is just part of the list, and it is some of my favorite rock and metal singers. I am so down this rabbit hole...

Yay! Operation Mindcrime is a fantastic album, but it's leaning a bit more towards the sound of Keeper of the Seven Keys than Metal Opera. All incredible, but I'd say incomparable.

And yeah, I thought you'd like the potluck of legends! There's something for everyone when listening to Avantasia 😁 Mystery of a Blood Red Rose was written with Meat Loaf in mind, but he backed out at the final minute as they were set to record, never giving a reason as to why... Saddening :(

Day 24 Sing along uncensored
"Untouchable Face (Live)" Ani DiFranco (+2)

I love Ani. Period. Live or studio, she is fantastic. But if I had to choose? She is blazing fucking brilliant on stage. This is from one of my favorite live albums, Living in Clip. This is a beautiful ode to unrequited crush, and it comes across as much less earnest live, like a tale told often enough to find the humor in your own pain. And the live version has the brilliant Sara Lee on bass.

And who cannot find common ground in this:

She's not really my type
But I think you two are forever
And I hate to say it
But you're perfect together

So fuck you
And your untouchable face
Fuck you
For existing in the first place
