I think it's easily explained by pretty mundane aspects of human psychology—faulty memory, inattention to detail, power of suggestion, group think—without dragging The Multiverse into it. Not that there isn't a Multiverse—I suspect there's another version of me down at Wednesday Bible Study right now trying to catch a glimpse down the first warm-weather tops of the year—but, best I can tell, the Mandela Effect is traceable to one individual, a "paranormal consultant" scrounging for content for her website, and is perpetuated mostly by YouTubers scrounging for hits. Seems more like an Internet scamming device than a "phenomenon."
