Sex & Shenanigans

What is one thing you started doing in attempt to be a better human?
Volunteer work. During Covid, I volunteered at local food pantries, because the need for volunteers was just overwhelming. If something comes up where I think I can be of use, I try to do what I can. I’m not sure that I went into volunteer work thinking I was making myself a better human, but it’s probably resulted in that. I think I’ve become more empathetic through what I saw at those food pantries. I remember after putting some boxes of food in one family’s car, and the mom snapped off a banana for each kid and said “see, I told you we were going to get breakfast”. I grew up not always knowing where the next meal was coming from, so that almost broke me. I needed a minute to compose myself after that.

That’s amazing … it is hard to grow and evolve in our changing words and their impact.
The trick for me was figuring out what words to use in their place in advance. Most gendered words are gone. Insults usually have to do with excrement. Still only neural
Pathways pop up in the oddest moments.
Years ago, I learned to just laugh it off when I do something stupid - because it happens and there is no reason to let it beat me up.

Then I realized I needed to absolutely do the same with my spouse. That was years ago, and it was probably the best idea I have ever had.

Then relatively recently, I realized I should extend that same grace to strangers. It isn’t always easy when I see someone do something really stupid, like almost hit my car or something… but life is so much better when I don’t let that stuff get to me. I don’t always succeed, but I try… and I won’t beat myself up when I fail at that too. 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️
I’m not always good about this, but I do try hard to realize that that idiot in the car in front of me has been me fairly often too. 🤣

You post just as many as me!🙄🤪

Fffiinnee I have been going to volunteer at this local dog shelter more!🤔🧐
But it’s my thread and mine usually spark conversation instead of making everyone just roll their eyes and groan.

That’s awesome … I’d love to volunteer at the shelter … though I don’t know if I could with my cat allergy … even if I stayed just with the dogs I’d probably come home with puffy red eyes and like 12 dogs.

Volunteer at a no kill shelter! You get to go and play and walk the doggos, and if they’re gone the next time you know it’s because they found a home! It’s the best.
