Yeah, if it's the same material as sweats instead of being knit, it's a sweatshirt. Most hoodies are sweatshirts, but sweatshirts don't have to have hoods.

To me, they're defined by their informality. You wear a sweatshirt as activewear; sweaters are for dressing up more.
