...at another shutdown. Why haven't Congress worked on the budget since they kicked it down the road months ago? Since all budgetary things originate in the House, it has little to do with the Senate. I think even Mitch is getting twitch about it. There isn't any reason for it. I remember a while back someone said that the Biden hearings were taking up all the time. The defense was that Congress could do more than one thing at a time. So why didn't they? And it's not like the bad old Dems were holding up the works. They have no control over what bills are written and moved out of committee or come up for a vote on the floor. The majority party does, the Republicans do. Someone please explain to me why we didn't have a budgetary bill working its way through the House weeks ago. And no, "because the Senate wouldn't pass it anyway" isn't an excuse. It's a copout.

Phony “government shutdowns are pure political theater. Anyone who still gets upset about them is an idiot.
Perhaps if I use smaller words and shorter sentences you will get the jist of my post...then again probably not, so I'll just do it the way most can comprehend.

It isn't about the government shutdown as much as it is about Congress not doing what they should be doing. This is the third time it's come up in this budget cycle. They've kicked it down the road twice. Why not do what they are paid for and get a real budget bill written and passed? Now before you go telling us all what the Republicans want and that's why it's kicked down the road, remember, the Republicans have control of the house. They can in effect pass anything they want and send it on to the Senate. Yes, it may not (actually probably not) get past the Senate but it's a start. You can't get anything done if you don't start.

We can go on this way, kicking it down the road, playing games up to the time limit then passing some stupid ass extension bill. Why? Why not get serious and just get it done the way it should be?

Perhaps you can supply an answer to that and not rely on snippy little bullshit answers, exactly the kind of thing the house is doing right now BTW.

What does congress care? They get paid even when not doing their job. Maybe because they care so much for their constituents?

Most of them, not all, have enough money that the pay is a perk more so than the motivation.

I'm still pissed about them because you can never tell when the Right will actually just pull the Trigger. Under Obama we lost our AAA credit rating and even if not all of us really noticed that does affect you and me. That's a very, very bad thing. How many times can they pull that before the people, mostly Americans, stop trusting that the money will be there? I fully understand that technically governments do not tax and spend. They destroy and create but the average person doesn't.

Either way at least the House caved so its time to see what will happen in the Senate.

Gov't dysfunction looks bad for Biden, even if house republicans are the reason.

Not necessarily. In 1996, the Republicans really, really tried to blame the previous year's shutdown on Clinton, but the voters saw through it.

So by “kicking the bucket down the road” every year, numerous times a year, they’ve set that as their norm. There by making it part of their job. So I’m wrong, they do care. I got it now.

Look you idiots, it's not about getting the job done it is about hiding all the pork. If they distract people on the budget issues it is easier to hid their pork. All that pork is what keeps them in power.

Government spending and debt are always rising for the same reason we still use fossil fuels and refuse to conserve energy. Humans generally are poor at long term planning. We don't like hardship today for a better future. The occasional shutdown is a token gesture so the Pubs can pretend they care about the budget as much as the Dems pretend to care about the environment, climate change, sustainable living, etc. The budget hawks will make their soundbites, the party will do its dance, and then both parties will resume business as usual.

It's called wealthyfare and my bet is you vote for politicians who actively engage in it.

I swear to god someone needs to upload a new propaganda file to you folks.

I honestly give zero shits about the pork. I don't really understand why anybody gives a shit. Most of the pork is in the millions. To put this in perspective one billion dollars is one thousand million. One trillion dollars is one thousand billion. Even before we run a deficit we have a budged of roughly three and a half trillion.

So if Ted Cruz's daughter wants a fuck mothering pony and in exchange her father won't just fillibuster something or break the fillibuster let me clear. That bitch gets two ponies one in advance and one when Ted keeps his word.

So this is an election year and there’s a lot at stake for both political parties, but whenever Congress struggles with any kind of long-term budget solution or is in talks of a shutdown, and especially now with raising the deficit - I’ve found Thom Hartmann explaining the two Santa Claus theory very helpful. Here’s a short version of it:

And for those with a few minutes to spare, here’s Hartmann himself explaining better in detail:

Because we all want 12 assholes plus McConnell running the nation

Will this congress session be even less productive than the last?

Failure to pass the budget is the norm.. In the last 50 years the federal budget has been approved on time 19 times. The reason the budget fails to pass on time sixty percent of the time is because there is no rule, law or regulation requiring the budget be approved by October 1st. The underling reason is budget approval is politics by other means..

Look at the historical reasons for government shutdowns.. Most of the time it was political sometimes the reason was just stupid.

September 30–October 2, 1982 Congress missed the deadline because both major parties had events they didn’t want to miss: Republicans were attending a White House barbecue and the Democrats had a fundraising dinner.

October 5–9, 1990 When President George H.W. Bush famously said: “Read my lips: no new taxes.” His later decisions to raise taxes during his presidency pissed off House Minority Whip Newt Gingrich. In 1990, Gingrich led a Republican rebellion against a funding bill, triggering a shutdown that led national parks and museums to close.

November 13–19, 1995 When reporters interviewed Gingrich about the shutdown, he mentioned that Clinton hadn’t talked to him on a recent Air Force One trip to attend the funeral for Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin.

September 30–October 17, 2013 was part of a battle between Democrats and Republicans in Congress over the Affordable Care Act, or ACA, which President Barack Obama had signed into law in 2010.

January 19–22, 2018 In 2018, the government shut down when Democrats in Congress tried to force Republicans to honor Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA.

December 21, 2018–January 25, 2019 In late 2018, another funding gap triggered the longest shutdown in U.S. history. This time, the funding argument was over Trump’s proposed plan to build a wall along the U.S. border with Mexico.

The present lack of budget approval stems from disagreements over student loan forgiveness and creating a pathway to citizenship among other things.
