Exactly, and I said that exact thing VERY early on in this topic.That’s why large metropolitan cities are only theoretical and can never exist in the real world.
The big business capitalists "leech", whether in the city, suburb or countryside. In cities, including big cities, there is much severe poverty, but it's the smaller towns where there's more of a "left behind" feeling alongside the poverty, causing much anger and rage.
And they say Downstate funds Upstate when we complain about things like the level of property tax. Wall Street got richer off the outsourcing of US manufacturing jobs to other countries, and then liberals have the nerve to say that Downstate funds Upstate. Wall Street is a bubble within a bubble, and may as well be a different planet. Big cities are pampered from the outside.
What does this have to do with dense, walkable cities?
They exist because of external supplies of food, fuel, and water being supplied. As a self sufficient entity they would fail and in short time.
have you been to Europe? City politics do not function outside of the city. Look closely at a map and you will see thousands of villages. How do you suppose one would travel through hill and dale to other villages? Your idea is ok if you only live on one patch of ground and nowhere else. Also the concept of land ownership in America differs vastly from European nations and how those villages are plotted. Any way you slice it your arguement of everyone existing shoulder to shoulder doesnt fit the reality of movement. Unless restricting movement is your goal. If so, this goal also includes a plethora of restrictions that will require dictatorship and jackboot enforcement. Changes and refinements need to be considered but this plan has been seen before. The ones pushing never included themselves as part of the restricted class.

You're the one that's lying. I never said I was self sufficient. No one is, even those that live off the grid. What I said was I have the capability to feed myself and my family if the need arises. I also have the ability to heat my home if the grid goes down. The world survived for a long time with no electricity, and for a hell of a lot longer without telecommunications and the internet. The truth is city dwellers will suffer and die at a much quicker and higher rate than those that can raise their own food, heat their own homes with wood, and work with others to share skills, crafts and products in the rural.
