Fill in the blank?
I'm looking for the kind of name a woman might adopt as part of her transition to a butch lesbian persona.
Given that she might have to pick it relatively early, bonus points if it's a name that would read more strongly as butch to Mary Grace than to people more familiar with lesbian culture.
I was thinking Ellen? After Degeneres, who I imagine would have been known to Mary Grace, and would have been shockingly masculine by the norms of wherever she grew up, but who I think is not considered that butch-y by the standards of, say, New York.
(Yes, I will get this sensitivity-read before I submit it.)
Hi. My parents named me Mary Grace. I used to be a perky blonde cheerleader, all skirts and sweater sets and crucifixes. Then I went to college in the big city and succumbed to the temptations of loose women and kinky sex. Now I wore a lot of denim and plaid, cleaned a barbell more often than the kitchen, and went by ____ socially.
On the bright side, I still hadn't let any horny boys put their you-know-what up my you-know-where. My parents weren't as proud of that as they promised they'd be. We didn't talk much any more.
