My sister-in-law used to work at a fairly "hip" cafe/restaurant, which is not the kind of place where you would normally find a lame guy like me (lol), so I would hang out with her all the time there... and they played a ton of Sleater-Kinney in that place. I liked that a lot.
I remember the first time that I saw Carrie Brownstein back in the day, and I thought she was the coolest person. I couldn't decide whether I wanted to sleep with her, to be friends with her, or to BE her! I still think she's the coolest. The more that I got into the band, the more I realized that Corin and Janet are awesome too! But I can't just abandon my twenty-five years 'plus' crush on Carrie...

Luv this song! Luv it. Excellent choice!
I do know Janelle Monae, although I'll admit that I don't know her stuff very well, and I've never heard this song before. It's really great.
But she kind of had me on the hook from the very first moment... because I absolutely luv James Baldwin, who is one of my all-time favourite writers and thinkers. Powerful. Fantastic song choice!

P.S. I had to 'edit' to add one more comment. I usually listen to people's song selections with my eyes closed because I feel like I can 'experience' them more fully... but I decided to listen to your song again, and this time I watched the video. Super cool. Damn.
