It's a medium range, medium power cartridge that used to be cheap to buy in bulk as were the platforms it was in.

Oh I know oh so well how cheap the ammo was. Too bad those days are gone for ever.

There are still a lot of lever guns out there doing lever gun things and popping out .30-30WCH slugs and killing deer out in the woods. I respect that. It works, it ain't broke, and it don't need fixin'.


The 7.62x39 is an odd duck. For utility's sake, I think of it as being kinda similar to the 5.56 NATO out to maybe 200 yards. The 5.56 has some ass out past 300 yards, but by 400 yards, the 7.62 is in the dirt. So if you don't have too far to shoot, kinda like the old thirty-thirty, it'll get the job done for many of the same reasons. Wat has an AK and an SKS in the rack. Neither is used much, but neither is going anywhere, either. I do prefer the AR to the AK platform.


From my house Out West, I sincerely doubt that I have a clear line of sight for a 400 yard shot in any direction.

There is not many places here on the mountain with a clear line of shot over a couple hundred yards including down the road! Hell I can't see well enough that far anyways without a scope.

So in the grand scheme of things where does the 7.62x39 round fit in? I have an AK variant (semi-auto of course) and a bolt gun for that same round. In the bolt gun it seems fairly accurate. I've never pushed it over a couple hundred feet since that was the longest area I had to shoot in.

My best deal was that Austrian 7.62 NATO. Wish I had bought a pallet of it.

No wasting shots on long range shooting for me. AK47 to a hundred yards out and then as the distance closes, buckshot. THAT is why I like the deep woods. Around here a shot over fifty yds. is a treat unless you are looking down the road.

Hundred yards and/or deep woods, perfect .30-30 or AK range.

This ammo shortage sucks! I voted for House Republicans because they promised me that they would tackle this rising inflation. What am I to do but blame Sleepy Joe .
