Shellback ceremonies used to be pretty intense. They are a shadow of what they used to be though.

I might put that into my idea pile for a future work.

This is just a guess, but maybe since earlier decades were more socially conservative (at least officially), the ceremonies allowed sailors an outlet to really cut loose. It might work for a story idea. Was it done on merchant ships too, or just the Navy? Was it purely an American and British event? That 1936 event involved a whole fleet crossing at the same time.
