Emily’s NEW positivity and being nice to each other thread

Fraternities have those paddling ceremonies for new members. Provocative, no? (It's in Animal House, for example.) In the Navy and elsewhere, they had drag shows and other goofiness for sailors crossing the equator for the first time. This 1936 photo shows some fun times in such an event.

Shellback ceremonies used to be pretty intense. They are a shadow of what they used to be though.

I might put that into my idea pile for a future work.

This is just a guess, but maybe since earlier decades were more socially conservative (at least officially), the ceremonies allowed sailors an outlet to really cut loose. It might work for a story idea. Was it done on merchant ships too, or just the Navy? Was it purely an American and British event? That 1936 event involved a whole fleet crossing at the same time.

A new Thanksgiving tradition: stuffing the turkey.

A family member is picked each year to be the turkey, and the rest of the family takes turns stuffing the turkey.
I recall a porn movie from the 80s about a family's new maid. The last scene was the family gathered abound the dinner table with the maid on the table.

Apropos of nothing, SciAm did a piece this month on the myth of women not being hunters, instead, showing how women are better at endurance. This photo is of an ultramarathoner calmly breastfeeding her 3 month-old during a rest stop.

Don't underestimate chicks!

I'm really impressed that the 3-month-old managed to keep up with her though.
