You are right, so is the leader of Egypt, but they may have no choice but to take the path their domestic politics demand. To that end, there are massive wild ass demonstrations in both countries demanding war on Israel. That is the worry.


A “region-wide Islamic war against Israel” would realistically mean an apocalyptic event - for exactly this reason the US has no diplomatic option but to commit itself to being prepared to dominate the sky over the area, by force if necessary. We just better hope it’s taken seriously by all parties - the Iranians understand very well its them the US response is directed to, but other actors toying with ideas hear it too.

His army is twice as big as our current army. It's well-armed as well. Turkey has an Air Force and a Navy, not as big as ours, but it is already in the region and could visit great harm to both our Navy and any arriving troops if Turkey became a belligerent against the US and Israel. If that were the case our aircraft carriers would be forced to operate from waters somewhere west of Italy to avoid being targeted, limiting our air operations to their near maximum range. Then there is Iran and its Russian and Chinese allies, all of whom would have to figure into any calculation we might make in this regard. This could easily spiral out of control, especially with the leadership we have now who's demonstrated weakness on the world stage has brought all of this upon us.

Our army is not configured for or positioned war in the Middle East and it isn't in the Middle East either. It would have to get there without being interdicted as well. Another point, the US Army at present is preparing for war in the Pacific:

We cannot defend NATO, fight a regional War in the Middle East, and deter the Chinese in the Pacific.

A comment was made by a strategic Mideast analyst earlier today which made sense in the broader scheme of things. Being an absolute ally to Israel through thick and thin would most likely convince some moderate Arab states that the US is a good partner to have in their corner. SA to counter Iran for example. No love lost between SA and Iran. Destroy Hamas, keep Hezbollah at bay to the north and I believe Turkey and Egypt remain neutral especially if Hamas is destroyed and Hezbollah is neutralized . The wild card is Putin and Syria. The other wild card is the formation of a Palestinian government minus Hamas and a vibrant global initiative attempt to rebuild the Gaza Strip.

I appreciate the size and on paper capability of the Turkish military. But there‘s minimal prospect of your country coming to blows with them, for a whole host of reasons including a military that would mutiny against such orders and, partly, because they know - if the gloves really come off - you could clean their fucking clock.

And yes, contrary to your line, you can absolutely defend NATO, fight a regional war in the mid-east and deter China. If you can’t then what the hell is all the military spending the USA indulges in for ? Plainly it’s not preferable, but to say you can’t do it is ridiculous.

If you read what I said about an Israeli/Palestinian settlement you’ll see I didn’t say the latter should be accommodated by Arab neighbours, but that a state of their own would need to be effectively a protectorate - in the beginning at least - of a reliable Arab neighbour to prevent another Hamas or Hezbollah rising to power.

But anyway, having identified all these perils before you and believing your military to be not nearly as good as the hype, what DO you think the USAs actions on this should look like ? You seem to be suggesting you’ve been spending multiple times what any other nation directs at its military and are now ready to surrender to the first rogue state that says “boo”.
