Trump said he wanted to do it when he ran for president but didn't. Does that tell us anything?

I don't understand why people are up in arms simply because public schools are teaching that racism is wrong, slavery was evil, and people who are different from you should be respected.

"Back in my day" (old man talking here) when schools taught these things, nobody cared, except for a few angry racists and hate-mongering sociopaths. And most public schools did teach these things! It was not considered a problem. They wanted to teach that all people of all colors, races and creeds were valued, and most parents were not only okay with that, they applauded it.

So what happened? Candidates running for public office started getting the idea that acting like an angry racist and hate mongering sociopath was "Cool."

It's NOT! It never was and never should be.

Did half the population suddenly turn racist and hateful all of a sudden? I give Republicans (the Average Republican, not the rightguide or ICanharpchobham45 variety) more credit than that to be decent, kind people.

Rick Perry promised to eliminate the Department of Education if elected back in 2011. It was one of the two departments that he could remember.

Of course they do. They need the people in America to be dumber than rocks so they can keep fleecing them for every cent they have.

Why shouldn't the party that loves the poorly educated, elects high school dropouts to Congress, tries to force their superstitions onto everyone else and has a policy of disbelieving what scientists discover, promote home-schooling?

The States want the money the Feds can provide, but do not want the accountability which goes with it (In many areas). Essentially, they want the power to discriminate in favour of "their people," but want Federal taxes to pay for it. That can be applied to both parties but the GOP candidates motives are significantly less subtle.

I would like to give the average Republican more credit, but since they keep supporting the MAGA cause covering for a criminal- I’m not so sure.

Plus, they seem to be so gullible they have bought into these fake facts (especially on education) they hear on conspiracy propaganda tonight.

I would say, when it comes to slavery- most learned it was a bad situation but the real bad happens after the civil war during reconstruction (well the result of reconstruction) and that is what most schools are starting to uplift. It was so much simpler when we could just skip past that to the world wars and then pop in civil rights without fully explaining how the southern racists were always able to circumvent rules meant to protect people…because when you see what they are still pushing— it’s the same playbook.

Only this time a generation fully knows the details of Jim Crow and isn’t buying the return of those evils, so they gotta call it something else so it doesn’t tip off the mouth breathers. They still need their cash to keep fundraising, but if the secret is out that they are really supporting racists and white supremacists….I mean DeSantis had to fire a staffer who let out the promo video early on the Nazi plan.

So yeah, all about the states (and the ‘pubs in those states) to control what is taught so new textbooks can be ordered with the Cheeto’s head on Mt Rushmore replacing Lincoln. Good use of tax payer dollars there.

I am gonna take a different track here...maybe it should be scrapped? Why are we fighting the battles we are? My view is because society is producing stupid people. If this isn't true...how can the Republicans have the control they do without stupid people supporting them? Obviously...the education system is broken. Start at the top. I think this is true for most of the Federal Systems.

Let states teach their kids how they see fit. It will only result in greater disparity among states. Sooner or later...states doing better will ask why the fuck are we supporting these other states? People wanting better will move to states providing better.

My oh my, how we do go on with no empirical evidence to support the narrative. As a matter of fact if one is to look at the voting records by cultural blocks in society and then compare those constituents to the cultural blocks with the highest proportion of failures and dropouts in the public school systems you find a HIGH degree of correlation. And that correlation suggests exactly the opposite of your assertion.

Of course you could always counter with, "only the stupid graduate from the public school systems, it's the highly intelligent that fail and/or drop out."

Plenty of empirical evidence. Not my problem you don't want to believe it.

I am 100% for giving states the right to destroy themselves. Don't expect our states to bail your asses out. Sounds fair right?

trump wants whatever it is YOU want... until after he uses you to get what he wants.

Very little money from the Department of Education goes to k-12 schools. They are funded with local property taxes. The school boards are generally locally elected, the teachers are generally county employees and the facilities are generally owned by the county.

The DOE sets certian standards for k-12 but is more focused on colleges.

https://educationdata.org/public-ed...nwide receive,education or $7,058 per student.

The question is...what are we getting for this?
See...local contributions vary among districts and states. Why is it...those districts and states contributing the least...want to change and decide how the Federal money is spent?

From a Federal perspective...has this investment resulted in a more educated society? Define educated. Teaching a test...isn't giving us positive results. So why do it?

I think we can do better

Private industry cannot be trusted to educate children. If there is no profit, there is no motivation for needed resources.

It's the same reason that private Industry cannot be trusted with healthcare.
This needs quoted for truth

It is why those "private" teaching establishments fail miserably in testing results. Now...if those are the issue...why then do they have issues in the work force? The data is out there for anyone to see

Are you capable of posting anything other than a load of crap. The department of education is an extension of the massive teachers unions, what the unions say… goes! Let the states run their school departments.

And yet charter and parochial schools are outperforming public schools. Most politicians enroll their children into private schools while insisting everyone else attend public schools.

Private healthcare is doing just fine

Yep, I figured you'd miss my point.

The goal is to educate everyone, not just a select group of people. Same with healthcare.

Our country needs systems that are provided for all, not just where the money is.

Let state legislators take care of their individual states.

Darwinism. Stop saving the stupid. Let them live with their choices.
