Mental health care funding has been repeatedly cut and denied by the republicans. They cut funding for it at every turn.

Frankly, if a person is declared incompetent to handle their finances they have zero business owning a gun. If they can't handle a checkbook, then they most certainly shouldn't get to handle a gun. Why do you think someone declared mentally incapable of handling their finances should have access to weaponry? You're going to have to justify that.

Again, what specific things should they be compromising on? "Mental health" is a nice airy fairy phrase that means exactly nothing when mental health funding gets cut every time we turn around. It also isn't specific.

There needs to be a central meeting point for discussion. I don't know what that is as I do not have access to the same information they do. The problem is with so many people they spend so much time stuck on differences and not on seeking middle ground. It seems that I have thrown out an olive branch here multiple times only to have it thrown back at my head. Can we try to find an answer at our level instead of continually finding reasons that something won't work?

Again, there seems to be a lack of familiarity with the facts at hand. The language is very specific - "mentally incapable". That's not simply being laid off or financial ruin. Those are different mechanisms and conflating the two is not only not helpful, but inaccurate.

So, again, how can you justify someone who is "mentally incapable" - they do not have the mental capacity to understand finances - as fit to own a gun?

There have been several common sense very popular pieces of legislation put forward by the democrats. And they are always shot down by the republicans - at the behest of the NRA. You are under the assumption that compromises can be made. What compromise is an option when one of the two parties first and only answer is "no"?

The only people who are prevented from owning a firearm are those who are either currently incarcerated for mental health issues (would a mental hospital really allow their patients to play with guns anyway?) or have been adjudicated by a court as being a mental defective.

So that's OK then. The same day after being released from detention in a mental hospital a person can buy a rifle.

Now that's sorted, we can campaign together to prevent gun owners from being too close to schools. You don't seem to have a problem with that, we're on the same page and that's good.

Keeping guns out of the wrong hands is a noble cause. Determine what cause a heart to become a dark heart is in my opinion a better strategy. Convincing parents to be more involved with their children, supervising internet access. What’s going on in Chicago and other inner cities is a breakdown of law and order, the education system and the erosion of the traditional family unit. Recidivism for violent felons is off the charts. DAs failing to prosecute violent criminals is criminal in its own right. Drug abuse and homelessness has spiraled out of control. Mental health is a big problem where internet chat rooms are spring boards for delusional behavior. Gun ownership increases are in direct correlation to the breakdown of law enforcement brought upon by a dis-functional judicial system. Legalizing drugs was supposed to eliminate the black market, with open borders drug cartels live across the street from you. Fentanyl deaths are at an all time high. Pure libertarian ideology supports legalization of all drugs but these new high potent drugs are ***one take** one dead kid ***.
