Beta reading / editing offer

Hey,

Just throwing this out there.

I've enjoyed doing some editing for a friend of late, and would be happy to do some more.

I don't want to sign up as a volunteer editor because - as I understand it - the quality is often really bad, and I would prefer to edit, not re-write someone else's story. So I'd rather work with the folk on here that I know have a generally high quality.

I'm not a qualified editor, more that I have found (and my friend has found) a significant value in having a second pair of eyes on a story. I've predominantly edited my own works, (in case you want to check quality).

I don't sign up as a volunteer editor, mainly because I often don't have the time, but I do keep an eye out in the Editor's forum and offer help from time to time. The quality there varies. Some people just want what you're basically offering, a second set of eyes. Some stories you look at and you just want to rewrite, but you can still provide some advice and back out politely.

I've done by best to help others where I can, as others have certainly helped me.

We all know time and various other things factor in to how many stories we can beta read.

I try to save my requests for help for when I'm truly stuck on something, as opposed to "Hey just double check this for me."

I generally feel at a certain point an author should do the bulk of the heavy lifting when it comes to editing themselves, then maybe submit to a beta reader for a final check.

I find the no LW so intriguing! I mean I get not wanting to publish there due to the comments or whatever. But not wanting to even read it, but anything else is fine? No lines around rape, brutal domination, scat, urine, non-consensually caged cocks? I guess I feel like maybe there is a particular LW trope you want to avoid, but whatever trope it is, cheating, violence, cuckoldry, there are lots of other LW stories that don't have it. Like my LW stories which were about a wife bringing home her girlfriend to share with hubby.

100%. That's how I've done it in the past - it's an 'edit', not a "I cba to tidy this crap up, do it for me, would you?"

I'd argue that scat is a badly-used colon, so they're pretty comparable

But the tags are on the bottom corner of the last page, aren't they? Means you have to make an effort to find them in advance; an effort I can rarely be bothered to make. Personally I think they should be at the top of every story - which is why I put them there.

Scat and urine: NMK, wouldn't seek out, but I wouldn't be particularly bothered reading them as an editor, say.

For the rest, the deciding factor isn't "how do I feel about this thing IRL?" but "what vibe am I getting from the author about it?" NC mostly gives me a vibe of "the author finds this an enjoyable fantasy but probably understands that rape is wrong IRL"; LW very often gives me a vibe of "the author would love to BTB in real life if they could get away with it".

I could be misreading, of course, but that's how they come across to me.
