I don't have any problem with lifetime appointments, but there need to be other mechanisms in place to remove a lifetime appointee in case of problems. What happens if one of them becomes incompetent because of say, age-related dementia? The only remedy we have now is impeachment.

Impeach Thomas? Even with all the nefarious things that are coming to light, it ain't gunna happen. And as far as BB's post about how much Thomas knows about the common people and how much he cares about them, that has been used for millennia by those who want to slip under the radar. Al Capone was murdering people by the dozens while providing soup kitchens for those unemployed to enhance his public image.

Legislation needs to be passed to force SCOTUS into producing and complying with a code of ethics. It bothers me to no end that the lower court justices have a code of ethics they must comply with, but SCOTUS does not. AND they refuse to produce one, using all kinds of excuses not to. Putting the fox in charge of the hen house is never a good idea. And allowing SCOTUS to function without guidelines is a recipe for corruption.
