Hi all,

I just got a comment that berated my use of the word cunt and because of it rated my story a 1. While I don’t normally care what people comment, I found it strange that someone would give a story a 1 star because they didn’t like that I incorporated the word cunt.

What do you think about using cunt in your stories?

I think the minimum word cunt is 750 words for a story. Ha, just kidding.

One thought is that words have different connotations in different cultures. In the USA, cunt is considered highly offensive, whereas in some other countries, it is considered much milder.

Also, context within the story matters. If you are trying to make a character unlikable and offensive, you need to have them use the type of language such a person would use. This includes your narrator.

To have a blanket rejection of a particular word shows a bit of narrowmindedness in my opinion.

I think it's a naughty word... And I never use it to call women that...
BUT, if it turns on the guy I'm chatting with to have my vagina/pussy called that, it excites me to use it...
If I use cunt in one of my stories, I probably am fulfilling someone's fantasy to hear that word...

Although the word is considered derogatory, I think it can be used in an erotic way especially by a woman. This whole episode makes me want to read the story!

That is an interesting comment on the story. The commentor appears to be complaining, not about the use of the word itself, but it's specific use in the story.

Was there a reason you used cunt instead of pussy when you used it? I read the story and you alternate pussy and cunt pretty regularly, but I couldn't see a difference in what made you choose which word when you used them?

I mainly switched between the two because using pussy all the time got repetitive. I also use different words for penis. As both the writer and the reader I find repeated words annoying.

Yes, I do too. Mostly you used the word pussy and then changed it up a little with cunt. I thought it was fine.

The word is used as part of everyday banter between mates in Australia. In other parts it's a highly effective word in humiliation play due to its coarseness. Calling someone a pathethic cunt in Queensland would be in the context of them not getting the next round in, for example. YMMV.

I'd write the comment off as a one off, the other commentators liked the story. I just think you hit a reader who had strong opinions on the use of the word.

I'd agree with you in general, the repetitive use of the same word can be tough to take as a reader.

Of course it depends on the story. It does tend to be a polarising word.

I don't mind it generally, far preferable in my ears than grating terms such as 'twat' or 'snatch.'

My characters often prefer 'quim.' Current WIP employs 'shmundie.'

When I use it, it's always a heat of the moment thing where the woman is really getting pleased and she uses it as an encouragement.

I think most words for female genitalia are a bit wank…and not in a good way.

I hate gash, slit, cunt, twat, minge, flange, clunge and then you’re left with pussy which you can’t overuse.

The only upside is it does mean you have to get creative in your description of the juicy beef taco.

This raises the possibility of OP doing a story dedicated to Tammy with a series of increasingly flowery and absurd euphemisms for the relevant body parts.

"Ladyflower", "Origin of the Universe", "Pearly Gates", ...

I used to have a lover who was quite demure, but when we fucked became quite the slut! She loved asking me to eat her cunt....and alos loved it when I talked about her cunt. Turned me on enormously too!!!
I’m actually also quite demure in most situations but I love the idea of a guy fucking me hard as he talks dirty telling me to take all of his cock in my wet cunt.

Me too lol. She was prim and proper but hearing her say, “Fuck my cunt” really sent me over the edge.

Words are only offensive as we make them in the context in which they're being used.

I fully understand "cunt" not being some people's favorite word.

But if you're reading a porn story, I really don't understand how "eating her cunt" is any more "offensive" than pussy, snatch, slit, gash or any other interchangeable term.

Has anyone ever said "cock" is offensive, but "dick" is perfectly okay?

I've certainly never heard anyone bring it up.

There are plenty of slang terms for genitalia I'm not a fan of and avoid using.

But not because I find them "offensive." Just silly or immature.

And it certainly doesn't mean other writers can't use them if they're so inclined.

Nor would I trash someone's story simply for using words I'm not a fan of.

I find cunt to be a lovely word. My first ever grad level English course, I was still an undergrad, bored of what was offered to us or had taken it already, and we had to do a report on the etymology of a derisive word. I chose cunt, and for some flippin' reason had to go first. Tomato red, I said that word roughly 42 times in about a ten minute span. I don't say it as much now, but I think it an awful lot.

Personally, I like it. I like the sound of it. It's short and hard and to the point, unlike some of the synonyms. It has a venerable history. Chaucer used a version of it in the Miller's Tale. Shakespeare made a pun on it in Hamlet. Its usage for the female genitalia long preceded its use as an insult against women, or against people generally.

I'm cautious about using it in stories, however, because a) many readers don't like it and b) in real life, according to my experience, many women don't like it, so using it in an erotic story doesn't seem entirely realistic to me. I still use it sometimes, but my go-to is "pussy." I use other terms, too.

I don't get why people get so worked up about it, one way or another.
