I like the use of the word to refer to genitals, but I've never liked it as an insult precisely because of its association with female anatomy and the suggestion that there's something wrong with that. Calling a man an "asshole," "dick," or "prick" has always seemed more appropriate to me.

In parts of the UK it's practically "hello".

Back in the 1990s I lived in New York. A good buddy of mine had been born in and grown up in Glasgow before moving across the pond.

Two important tasks I had when we were out were to:

1. Remind him to not use 'cunt' when he meant 'friend', 'fellow' or 'you.'
2. Jump in between when I failed at 1 and make explanations.

I use the word judiciously, adjusted for the story's locale. With American characters, I've had the odd 'proper' woman use it in the throes of sexual excitement, at least one shocked herself to have used it. Didn't slow down her fucking though. Non-American characters are a bit more prone to use it in such circumstances.

I've also had characters, both men and women, use it as an intentional insult, for the reasons well covered in this thread.

My most recent ex-wife referred to her genitalia as 'my cunt' on the rare occurrences when the subject might come up, regardless of the situation. She also liked using it in sex talk. She was bold and unembarrassed, and I've used her example with most of my MFCs. I did receive complaints, though. I gradually realized that sparing use is more effective, like the adjectives 'just' and 'very' (among others). I use it only to refer to female genitalia, not to a person in general, and I recognize it is a trigger word for some people.

I've lived in England for nearly nine years and was initially surprised at how the word was used here. Much like fuck or cheers, the context is essential and opens a wide variety of interpretations. I've noticed in the past year, its usage in podcasts has declined and in some cases is now bleeped out.

I love the word cunt and use it all the time in every possible context.

WAAAAAY back in a Sociology class I took during the dark ages, we read this book and it completely changed the way I looked at the word (raised to believe that it was derogatory), and amazed to find that it wasn't.

When cunt is used as a UK insult, it's grudging praise at the persons skill at being an intentional fucker. No misogyny.

Hence the more common sign reads "Trump is a Fanny" - the anatomy may vary across the Atlantic but the tone of insult probably travels better.

I use the word "cunt" in my stories when "pussy" seems too cutesy. It depends a lot on the character that's using the word. It seems to come more readily to the tongue for a person who's less morally constricted and less inclined to use euphemisms.

As an insult, I use it to refer to an undesirable character quality in a woman, and not to her nether aperture. "I thought she would be easy to get along with, but she turned out to be a real cunt when it came to money." It's sort of equivalent to calling a man a "prick" or a "dick." The reference is clearly not to his cock, but to the fact that he can be an asshole at times (and, yes, I'm not referring to his anus here). In American usage, "cunt," "prick," and "dick" convey a sort of self-centered personality trait.

I just got a comment that berated my use of the word cunt and because of it rated my story a 1. While I don’t normally care what people comment, I found it strange that someone would give a story a 1 star because they didn’t like that I incorporated the word cunt.

What do you think about using cunt in your stories?

Someone replied with "a bit pervy" to one of my stories, which I thought was very odd for an erotic fiction website. I'm not a big fan of the C-word, but I certainly wouldn't drop a 1 star for its over-use!

In both stories and reality, I use 'cunt' to describe anatomy and not entire people.

Like any word that's derogatory and tied to a specific group of people, using it as an insult can lead people to believe that you think poorly of the whole group. I don't often insult people, but when I do I'd rather use insults with a minimum of collateral damage.

But, I would add, the idea that it is liberally used and generally accepted in the UK is a slight exaggeration. It is still a very forbidden, taboo curse word, probably the most taboo. It doesn't seem to be as problematic as it is in the US, but it's still not a word you would use too much in 'polite society'. Having said that, usage varies depending where you are in the country.
