What do you like doing when neither writing about nor indulging in sex?

We have Ukraine right now (I give it a 50% chance that other powers will directly intervene)

It was a proxy war between NATO and Russia from the moment the invasion took place. If it escalates to "direct intervention," it's very clear that Russia cannot compete with NATO and all it has in that event is nukes, so what happens in that event (if Ukraine actually falls and Russia gets to carry out its ambitions against Poland) is a general nuclear exchange and the actual end of modern civilization.

What is this thread about again? Oh, "What do you like doing when neither writing about nor indulging in sex?" I guess talking about history and politics?

Writing fanfiction, which doesn't have sex, or at least hadn't had it in a while- one reason I started writing it, was to take a break from here. Write short stories, and such, that'll probably never be read on Wattpad. Articles for Medium.

Building and riding bicycles. I have three out of the twelve ridable, there's a group I ride with called Bikes.Cruise.Brews, when it's not cold as balls outside.

Watching Netflix, YouTube, etc. For the past week, or so, I've been watching these short films by a YouTube channel called DUST. Reading webcomics, two of which some of you might like, Alfie, and Ennui Go!

I draw when I get the urge, vehicles, women, this and that.

Do some sewing, got a few projects under way.

Sometimes I make YouTube or TikTok vids.

I play video games here and there, I had been all in to Skyrim, but my xbox1 stopped playing disc, and I need something to transfer the save files from it, to the one I found in a dumpster- that works perfectly.

* Reading crime fiction, thrillers, clean romance, books about writing
* Play chess online
* Watch tennis and homestead families on YouTube

I'm a father first and foremost, so I'm almost always doing something with my daughters.
I'm a Certified Referee, Judge and Trainer.
I teach Self-Defense and Wilderness Survival.
I am currently studying to get my HAM Radio License.
I like to watch Sci-Fi shows on DVD/Blu-ray when everyone is asleep. (I'm looking for a new show if anyone has suggestions)
I am working on a novel that I hope to get published.

Hobbies I'll admit to include:
Board games, generally German-style. Particularly fond of Ticket to Ride in its many variations, and the Castles of Mad King Ludwig (bought that after a visit to Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau). I play a few online.

Cooking and eating out. Our local Michelin-starred place would like it known that they are still filling their tables since you-know-what, but you can now get a table with a day or two's notice and often be squeezed in on the day for lunch or at 6 or 10pm. Similar for other top restaurants. Their lunches are a remarkably good deal for the standard of food you get.

Providing advice on disability rights and claiming benefits - the required forms are incredibly onerous and questions need to be answered in a certain way for the applications not to be thrown out. I managed to fight my way through the system with the help of a now-defunct charity and a now-overwhelmed one, so I try to pay it forward.

Cryptic crosswords. You have to learn each setter's style. Partner and I used to spend about 6 hours on the one in my union mag every couple months, including using the internet, and could finish it half the time. The setter died and hasn't been replaced (seriously, what do I pay union dues for?) so now trying uni alumni mag ones. Sometimes we finish easily, sometimes manage only a couple words.

I'm not the one who brought up fucking Ukraine. I just followed it through.
I know. Sometimes I have doubts when I (deliberately) cause thread drift although often no one calls me out on it. In any case, I was being half tongue-in-cheek. That last post I wrote was mostly directed at myself, because if I answered you directly, I would have really been going off on digressions. ;)

I sew mostly straight lines...

I've made a few things, like a mermaid tail fleece blanket where the fin is a bag the blanket can fold into...

She made the pattern for my mermaid blanket idea and showed me how to sew it. I still have like four of them that I now don't know what to do with, lol
That sounds like the beginning of an enchanting story....

I can't do much because of my disabilites.

But:

I annoy the local councillors and the Member of Parliament by writing letters (which have far more effect than emails).

I have three campaigns running at present.

I also advise my youghest daughter who has been a council candidate fro teh Green Party where she lives. I don't agree with her polictics but she has more sense thatn the party hack who just beat her.

I think The Orville is a pretty damn, good show.

Firefly
Jericho
Upload
Surface
Terra Nova
The Feed.

Most people have missed at least one of the above, but I love them.
Firefly is #4 on my Top 5 All-Time Sci-Fi List.

I've seen Jericho and Terra Nova available on Netflix and/or Amazon Prime.

Upload on AP just did not look good to me, so I passed on it.

I've never heard of Surface or The Feed.

What do you like doing when neither writing about nor indulging in sex?

Motorcycling - More an addiction than anything else. I was hooked when I threw a leg over a 305 Honda scrambler back in the 60's. I've got close to 450,000 miles on two wheels.
Building - building things gives me immense satisfaction. Stuff like: houses ( I helped build two) additions like a full porch, concrete fence posts, a loafing patio on the barn for the nags, a gazebo with a central firepit, a covered bridge.
Photography - I'm an enthusiastic amateur. I've got some really good shots of sunrises around here.
Backpacking - I love the mountains and being on the trail. I was a scoutmaster for a number of years and did a lot then. I'm getting a bit long in the tooth to do the miles I use to but I still like throwing on a pack and taking a trip.
Reading - I've been an avid reader since childhood and still do. A lot of sci-fi but other things too.
Cooking/Baking - I've been a decent cook most of my life but in retirement, I've tried to branch out and try more complicated dishes
Forging - A natural extension of welding experience. I built a forge from an old propane tank. I've yet to turn out any pattern welded steel, but it's coming.
Volunteer work - As I said above, I was a scoutmaster and was also a member of a couple of volunteer organizations. I'm in the process of being accepted as an advocate for kids going through the juvenile court system.

So...

Ok.

I like to watch videos on space science topics. PBS Space Time and Isaac Arthur being two favorite YouTube channels. I already read a lot of history from various parts of the world. I seem to have been vacuumed up by Simon Whistler's many YouTube channels on all sorts of topics - funny in that he himself is just a guy who reads scripts and in his 'off script' moments you realize he's not very well informed and not a deep thinker - but his writers are both and his presentation style is good for learning things.

I follow politics a lot as I do have 3 relevant degrees in that and related topics - but I try to not discuss it on the Internet with folks who's understanding is informed by their social media or opinion-news channel of choice. Whether they agree or disagree with my views is not material.

I rarely read fiction anymore outside of erotica. That began back when I was in university and needed the time to read books on... history, physical and political sciences. And has kind of stuck in the years since.

I sometimes play 'The Sims 4' but only because I can mess with it and then see what happens. I used to be in 'Second Life' but that place is way too full of racists and 'less intelligent' busy bodies so I've drifted away.

Since the Pandemic I've kind of become a homebody...

If there's something I like doing even more than writing, it would be reading. I try to write every day, but I absolutely insist on reading at least twenty pages in two different books each every day.

I'm disabled so my hobby is collecting doctors. Other than that:

1. Ham radio operator and have been for 29 years, just advanced to General.
2. Volunteer as an emergency communicator during weather emergencies, via ham radio and answer phones at the Emergency ops center
3. Volunteer as a nerd at the county sheriff's office scanning old arrest records into digital format.
4. Model Railroading
5. Rail fan.

I've found that Yellowtail Shiraz is quite good enough for writing time.

A number of posts got deleted from here last night, which is a good thing. I admit that I inadvertently contributed to the problem. My apologies. :(

- Writing other stuff (fantasy, urban fantasy, military Sci-Fi),
- Reading (fantasy and history)
- auditing history classes
- Video, oh my God, video games...
- trying to exhaust a big fuzzy dog so he won't bark all damn night. I know, I know. There was a squirrel.
