They have several different options. You can buy Office as a one-off purchase, locked to a single device ("Home and Business"/"Home and Student"), or you can get a recurring subscription that can be used across multiple devices ("Microsoft 365"). I think there's also a free Word-only option.I have a rather old version of Word. Does Microsoft now require a subscription of some sort for Office programs? It used to be that one just purchased a program and that would be good enough for years.
They seem keen to steer people onto the subscription model but for me the one-off purchase model works out cheaper even when I have to buy two copies to cover my desktop and laptop. 365 comes with a bunch of extras that I don't have any use for, but might be relevant for some.
