I have a rather old version of Word. Does Microsoft now require a subscription of some sort for Office programs? It used to be that one just purchased a program and that would be good enough for years.

They have several different options. You can buy Office as a one-off purchase, locked to a single device ("Home and Business"/"Home and Student"), or you can get a recurring subscription that can be used across multiple devices ("Microsoft 365"). I think there's also a free Word-only option.

They seem keen to steer people onto the subscription model but for me the one-off purchase model works out cheaper even when I have to buy two copies to cover my desktop and laptop. 365 comes with a bunch of extras that I don't have any use for, but might be relevant for some.

365 also let’s you use Word on your phone, which is how I write all my Lit stories.

I really should get new computers (I also have an Apple that is exactly twenty years old although I rarely use it any more.) Should I replace these machines? Of course. Do I have the money for that? No.

One of the pitfalls of proofreading is that one tends to see what should be there rather than what is there. It took me two weeks after publication to catch that I've recently written "she" instead of "she's." But I'm not going to fix it at this point.

P.S.: Sorry, I know, thread drift.

Thanks. Maybe, it's still newer than what I have now. You've seen this on eBay or somewhere else?

The way I understand it, older files can migrate to (be used by, in other words) newer versions but not so much the other way around.

It's a web store. I'll have to look it up at home. I need a copy for my wife's new laptop since there's no need for her to pay a sub for the small amounts of word and excel she uses.

I’ll make the comment that there’s no free lunch. While It’s not impossible that some individual one person somewhere is really selling their one copy of an older version of MS word and would sell it just once, even if 100 people offered to pay just ten bucks for it, I will be the party pooper and say it’s not likely legit, but sadly (software licenses spoil all the fun) not technically legal per the license terms either, even if the seller were legit.

Sidenote: I detest the office subscription, I’m not here defending *that*. I wholeheartedly prefer paying once, and keeping and using Older versions, which are fine (for a while.). Don’t ignore the danger of keeping a really old version no longer getting security patches though (think hacker related disaster possibly happening just from opening a document ) (2003/2010 for sure not supported. 2013? I’m not sure. I’ve lost track when support ended. Someone else will know, I don’t feel like googling to support my claims this morning)

Good dialogue, but more importantly easy to read. I see so many stories that seem like a jumbled mess of words.

But it ends rather abruptly. Next time let readers know more is coming.

I would gladly offer more constructive criticism but I don't wanna be that guy picking apart little things on your very first effort.

Others are offering fine suggestions and I'm sure if you want more advice/ tips, you'll ask.

I've done the same thing. Forgot to put 'part 1.' Append 'part 2' to the next and it will go into series automatically. And like others have said, an excellent first work.
