Official Support Thread - 5th Annual 750 Word Project

That's the challenge, how to present a story good enough to get five stars in just 750 words. I did get a few 5s, a few comments
Thank you for your comment @Smuttyandfun it really made my morning.

I'm off to Vero Beach, see you all this evening!

Oo. Thanks! It didn't dawn on me that there was a tag for that. I'm not too good with tags... apparently.

I'm a little slow to the party but mine's up in IR.
All It Takes Is A Change
Not exactly turning LitE on it's ear, but it's early still...lol. A handful of fav's and a few new followers this morning :)

Yes, we can say that. But, personally, I like knowing why different programs come up with different answers for something that should be so completely unambiguous as counting words. If all the programs were correct and bug-free, they would all arrive at the same answer.
My word count discrepency came up with my use of the em dash. I put spaces around it, and when I did that, Lit counted the emdash as a word. Someone else mentioned each asterisk in their scene break being counted as a word. Lit's software isn't counting words. It's counting groups of non-spaces. That's a bug.
I doubt the bug will ever get fixed. Lit's admins have bigger fish to fry.. But it scratches my geeky nerd pervert itch.
This. Absolutely. I just like knowing.
Why bother? You came up with 750 yourself. What is the compulsion to mess with it further?
Because, as I have stated, I am curious. That is it. End of story. No compulsion. No obsession. I am curious. As a techy guy, who has written programs in the past...I find little quirks and oddities in programs like this interesting, and fun.
Rendering of "* * * *" as four words isn't a bug. It's the way it's counted. Publishing doesn't have the wordage hang up that some authors engaging in a minor writing exercise seem to have.
You really seem to have missed the point. I am just curious. I'm not obsessed over it. I'm not going through my text with a comb trying to find a mistake. Just posted about the oddity and wondered what caused it. I'm sure some authors do have "wordage hang ups" (though in this case, wordage was the actual challenge...so thats kind of a weird point to make) but I was never hung up on the "extra word" I was simply wondering where the discrepancy was, because I am a curious person.

My story checked as having 750 words in the body of the text. As I stated early, for some reason, the front matter dispersed, even the title isn't inside the story. I didn't receive anything indicating it was too short or too long.

Thanks for your kind comment as well. Writing a story in 750 words is a challenge, but it's a good exercise in restraint. Knowing you have to do it in so few words, really makes you think about every single word.

I appreciated your comments, along with @AlinaX, @alohadave, @robroy1968 and even the other person who pointed out a typo  No sex - poetic prose is what rocks my world (y) 🫖🍰

So...another comment on my story about the "extra" word...lol I find it very interesting how much people are actually focusing on that. I've never done this before, and based on what everyone was saying ahead of time, I was expecting people to be annoyed at the shortness...not annoyed or bothered if the count was off...lol

That being said, I think I found the problem. And it is likely similar to the * * * * issue that was mentioned before.

women - his littles
I think the " - " was counted by Lit as a word..but I know that Google Docs did not count it.

Still not concerned about it. But I am amused by the fact that I have gotten 2 comments by readers that seem bothered by the "extra" word...

Anyone recall if Lit tends to run sweeps following initial release of 750 word stories? It would seem like a good idea given the likelihood of bitter 1-bombers trying to discourage future 750 word challenges. I’m pretty sure mine has received a few…

I don't think they did so before, and this isn't an official Lit. contest. They might if someone asked them too, I suppose.

Ok. I'm here, lets straighten up the furniture before Laurel finds out I've been gone. I made it to the Vero Beach area and I'm sitting under a swaying palm tree with an ice cold beer, a fine cigar, and a laptop and I just submitted story #2:
750-2 Saturday Afternoon (Lesbian Sex)
I need to work on my titles

I KNOW mine has received at least three 1's, with one or two of those coming from my dedicated followers. But I think the sweeps skip stories less than two or three weeks old. My usual 1's don't disappear for at least two weeks.

I personally wouldn't mind a 1 if it was accompanied by a coherent, legitimate explanation in the comments
That's my attitude, too.

But there are some authors who take ANY criticism as "hate speech" and lash out, even when it's a well-reasoned critique. I think that's where I've earned a few followers ... to ensure they know when I've posted a new story to 1-bomb. Every story I post gets a 1 rating within the first one-three hours.
