Police officers were dispatched to the Pelosi residence around 2:27am local time, San Francisco Police Chief William Scott said at a news conference today.

• Officers encountered suspect David DePape, 42, and Paul Pelosi, 82, "both holding a hammer."
• DePape "pulled the hammer away from Mr. Pelosi and violently assaulted him with it," Scott said.

They just showed the Pelosi house on the news. Gotta say, I was kinda surprised. It didn’t look like a gated enclave as I had assumed. The neighborhood was crowded with little distance between the houses and almost no yards to speak of. Lots of cars parked on the streets. I’m sure the house is beautifully appointed inside, but there’s very little privacy or room to breathe. Looks like a pretty regular high density middle class urban neighborhood.

The big issue in my mind now is what is the DA going to do? I read that she's going to bring charges, but what charges will she pursue? And is this guy even mentally fit to stand trial? I'm pretty damn sure that an "insanity" defense is going to be pretty high on this clowns list of pleadings.

Haven't seen anything regarding his legal status outside of being from British Columbia. He also has had issues with drugs, though have seen nothing about his sanity mentioned either.

And I'm not saying that his actions were sane nor his drug use legal.

As more information comes out it seems that he was a "Green Party" member, as if that means anything. <shrug>

Apparently the guy has a LONG history of bizarre behavior and interactions with law enforcement. I'm sure we'll be treated with more detail over the coming days.
